The Amsterdam Biblical Museum is situated in two canal houses dating from 1662. The houses were built by Philips Vingboons, a famous Dutch architect, by order of the Amsterdam merchant Jacob Cromhout. The Ceiling in the main hall was painted with mythological images by Jacob de Wit, a noted Dutch painter. (1717)

The museum was founded by Rev. Leendert Schouten who put his own collection on public display in 1851. This collection still forms the heart of the museum.

Naturally, the heart of the museum is the Book itself. Among the Bibles on display are the first printed Bible in the Low Countries dating from 1477 and the 'statenvertaling' from 1637, the first edition of the authorized Dutch translation.
