my father came from amsterdam and as a child i would often go over to holland to visit his uncle and his father, my grandfather. our oom arie lived in the westerstraat and my grootvaader blijvt in johan melchior kemperstraat. as a child i soon realised that my father was much happier in westerstraat and loved to go to the market and mix in with the locals, he referred to himself as jordaanaise or mokum. my grandfather was a little aloof and preferred to shop in the kalverstraat area. my mother being english compared the mokums to the cockneys here in london with their slang words. my younger sister and i would fall about laughing when our father used to play a record called ' geef mij mijn amsterdam dat is mooij dan paris '. and how he would listen out for his football reults on radio hilversum and sulk if dws lost. i still have cravings for the cheese they sold in the jordaan called leidse kaas? we don't have that cheese in england and it is an acquired taste. lovely web-site my regards john.
