Grocery Bags

A few years ago I bought a few items in a small Dutchy neighborhood
grocery store outside of the Amsterdam centrum area, not heavuily
frequented by tourists. I expected the clerk to put my items
in a bag, as is the custom in the US. But she did not. So I just
stood there like an idiot for a moment, then I asked, "May
I have a bag?"
The clerk looked at me like I was from outer space. She
mumbled something in Dutch, then dug under the counter looking
for a used plastic bag, and she put my stuff in a bag. Perhaps
she mumbled something about "dumb americans"......
and her assessment in general was correct :-)
My question is, Is it the custom in NL for customers to
bring their own bags and bag their own stuff?
:-) Dogbreath, aka Dumb American

This is the custom in most all of europe. I guess they value the trees that they have left, as should we.
