If you're worried about passport theft

The advice most often given is to make a photo copy (copy
machine) of your passport and use that. You should try to keep
most if not all your important documents and excess money in
the hotel safe. I do. I'm old enough that no one questions my
age though.

Me too BBB.I have never needed a passport on the streets of Amsterdam and I am certain that I would never carry my original with me as I might drop it in a kamer as I pull my pants off. Its best to make a xerox if you are concerned about it. I keep my wallet, passport, credit cards and excess cash in the hotel safe. I take the amount of cash that I think I will need for my evenings entertainment and I carry it in my front pocket. I usually stay in a place close to the action so I can return easily if I need more cash.
