Amsterdam Knowledge Base
Following the generous response to a first timer recently,
how about a thread of trip reports - or recounts, of our first
time experiences? I still have my notebook to remind me of the
details. At the time, I hadn't discovered this site. Just a thought.
What do you think?
My first trip to Amsterdam was December 30 1992. My husband was stationed in Germany and we drove 6 hours to Lieden to stay at a hotel that was offering a discount to military personnel. We made the mistake to driving into the city and after driving around the Centrum for 1 hour without finding somewhere to park, we returned to Lieden. I was very tempted to tell my husband to just let me out of the car and come back for me later! The next day (New Years Eve) we got smart and took the train from Lieden into the city. We found a coffeshop near Cental Station named 7th Heaven (Now it is a Bull Dog Coffeeshop). There was a very sweet girl named Debbie working there that we struck up an acquaintance with and she invited us to stay for their New Years Eve party. Around 3 a.m. we realized there were no trains returning to Lieden, so we found a nice taxi driver who returned us to our hotel. That was the beginning of a beautiful relationship with Amsterdam. Now, 10 years later, it is still my favorite European city. I must go there at least once a month. I have made some great Dutch and Surinam friends over the years and I have been fortunate to finally learn my way around the city by tram and foot. Now, Amsterdam is like my second home. Sometimes I just drive up to spend the day shopping and other times I go for a weekend or a week. I Love My Life!
