The bottom part was built in 1512 as part of the city fortifications. The octagonal part and steeple were added in 1606 as decoration. 5 years later the top starting tilting so they had to attach ropes to pull it back up straight. The VOC sailors used to meet there before being ferried out to their East Indies bound ships. Now it houses the offices of the Amsterdam Water Authority. I believe it used to be a popular subject for Rembrandt.
