I cast my vote for Dampkring too, it has been my first stop on more than one visit. 2nd choice might be Tweede Kamer which is owned by the same folks, I think. It was my girlfriends first coffeeshop for what its worth and she was blown away by the whole experience. She is a lightweight and only took 2 or 3 hits that first visit, but being able to do the whole thing totally in the open was like a dream come true to her. I hope your girlfriend has just as good a time or better.

My first was Rockland, but only because it was the first one I saw, I never went back.

moe.
Going to be back in Ams in about a week. Will be my girlfriends
first time. We are staying near the flower market.
Which coffeeshop should I take her to first?
The most votes will win.
"remember your first?"
mr.bob
near the flower market............dampkring......i personally vote for dutch flowers but i doubt it will get more then my single vote.
I second de Dampkring... and second would be de Rokerij right beside the flower market. Have an excellent stay!
I think you can't go wrong with the Dampkring. Whether it's the smoke, the 'vibe', or the decor - it's all a winner.
De Dampkring! My personal favorite. The first time I tried their moonshine, I just about went to heaven.

My first was Smokey's, as it was close to my hotel and it had pipes for sale. I arrived late and wanted to get stoned for bed. I needed a pipe, but should have gotten gear from De Dampkring.

Peace and have fun!
Thanks all. Dampkring will be our first stop. 1 week from today.
I will post a review.

Allow me to place a caveat here: Dampkring can be extremely crowded and is not my suggestion as the best place to go first.
Considering the area you're in, I'm gonna place my vote for Stix.
Anyone agree?
Last time I was there I visited the Tropenmuseum and had a great time. It is a three story building that's open in the center for large displays. It has rooms similating many equatorial cultures from around the world. The music in each room was different according to the country of origin, really cool stuff. A little park and pond across the street is a great place to burn one before or after, check it out if you want to getaway from the centrum crazy for a while, easy tram ride.
From reading trip reports around here, one would sometimes think crawling through coffeeshops and wandering the crowded byways of the centrum straats is the only way to enjoy the effects of a good smoke (or brownie, bon-bon treat). Of course, amsterdam is awash with interesting locations that could highten any THC laiden outing.

So, in your experience, what are some of your favorite NON-coffeeshop focused locations to enjoy your stone? Any particular paintings or museums? Any particular wings or exibits in the museums that really added to your efx? Feel free to included things like poster shops, vintage cinema houses or jazz clubs to the list.

To start things out, one place I'm looking to check out when I hit the dam is the Japanese Tea Garden ().

Enter the building through the main doors, and go up the stairway at the back. There you'll find the entrance to the Tea Garden. Take off you shes before you go in. The beautiful, two tiered garden is built around a waterfall. English menus are available and you can choose from a variety of teas as well as japanese food. It's very relaxing to sit on the cushions and drink your tea while soft japanese music plays overhead. The area is smoke free and no cell phones or laptop computers are allowed. It's an oasis of calm in the midst of all the commotion of the Centrum.

Of course, to really get the full effect out of any location where smoking isn't allowed, canna-food products should probably be included in the menu for your day (blond hash dissolved in coffee or coco is a particular favorite).

So, what are your favorite haunts?
As a newbie, soon to go on my first trip to Amsterdam, I'd love to hear about more places like the Japanese Tea Garden from more experienced travelers. I will certainly go there.

i really enjoyed walking around vondel park while stoned, there is so much to see and lot's of people to watch...the rijks museum was also nice to see while stoned.the whole city is amazing and a trip to see and be a part of. peace~
sorry to inform you that oibbio and the japanesse tea room closed about 2 years ago. check out www.underwateramsterdam.com for a monthly agenda for things to do in amsterdam besides the coffeeshops.
Don't laugh, I found the Heiniken Experience fun and you get three free beers!
Peace, jenbean
i enjoyed a comic store just north of The Waag.

i also enjoyed stumbling thru any of the outdoor markets.

Face it... being stoned anywhere in Amsterdam is a favorite place to be...
Soak up some of the peaceful vibes in the hof (courtyard), the best known is, Begijnhof just of the Spui, its an oasis of calm in an otherwise busy area. Locating these hidden gem's are sometimes difficut but well worth the effort.
Quite true, but how would one phonetically pronounce "Begijnhof"?

"Beh-Zhen-hofe" ? Probably not, eh?

How many "hofs" are in Amsterdam?

(:: me
Greetings Non,

Your pronunciation sounds like a winner to me. A local lady I met pronounced it close enough to that. How many are there ? I'm not sure, I've found a few, mostly cycling in and around the Jordan.
if your into art a visit to the van gogh museum is a must while catching a buzz. also look out at the nearest tram numbers to your hotel and just ride and ride, you'll definatly find something to do or see. just don't forget your tram number!
-been there done that...can't wait to go back!

More like Bay-chhhh-eye-n-hoff, I would think. (The chhhh (Dutch 'g') being a guttural throat clearing sound similar to the Hebrew or Yiddish 'ch' sound.)

BTW: _non, have you looked at my trip report? I much prefer getting out and doing things than just sitting in a coffee shop and watching my ass get bigger. You'll notice that all my coffeeshop trips are either rests between other activities or quick purchases. I have literally never spent more than an hour in a single coffeeshop. In fact I have to say, I start getting antsy the second I'm done with my joint or beverage, usually a bit before...anyway, I suppose I'm only on day 2 so there's not much to get, but keep reading as I post and you'll find plenty of non-coffeeshop things to do. But bear in mind that the things that are fun for a couple may not be fun for a single guy. (ie. you will not get any good info on prostitutes from me)

hi
by comics you would happen to mean comic books? would you? if so what kind?
thanks
yes comic books, it was a very interesting shop, they hand thousands of comic books, it was on the north east corner of The Waag square.

I agree totally, although my recent trip (and accompanying reports) would not indicate such. I blame this on my falling in with a bunch of hardened Channelites on this trip , and the fact it was a solo 'hit & run' visit.
Of my 4 visits to Amsterdam, this one was the shortest, yet I probably smoked more herb than my other 3 trips combined!
I did take a bike ride this trip though. Something I wouldn't be able to do if the wife had come along (she's a none rider).
And in keeping with the subject of this thread, my vote for "place's to enjoy your stone", would be on the seat of a bike, exploring the City and the countrside which is so close at hand - of course you probably shouldn't be TOO STONED.
haha you made my day! the more i hear the more i cant wait to go.
Hi, I'm enjoying your postings and am wondering if anyone has suggestion for travel from Amsterdam to Marseille and then later from Marseille to Charles De Gaulle airport?? One way via air france was almost $600 usd.

Would appreciate any ideas, as I'm having a hard time reading the itineraries on rick steves web site.

Thanks in advance!
Check RailEurope for point to point fares as well as multiple country passes. It is usually a little cheaper to buy the tickets after you get there but you may have to stand in a long line.
