Under 18 in Barney's or similar situation

Can an under 18 year old eat in a place like Barney's, where there is also a place to buy cannabis? I'm going to Amsterdam with my 17 year old son. I understand that he can't enter coffeeshops, but I don't understand the rules for places that sound like they might also be restaurants. Can anyone help this novice understand the rules?
The law states that if anyone caught in a coffeeshop is under 18 then that said coffeeshop can lose its licence - and on another note my wife is 29 and has been asked for ID (she looks extremley young for her age I must be doing something right) several times after I had ordered and recieved my weed/hash and then proceeded to order a drink/munchie ie. when we were going to stop at the coffeeshop for a smoke so IMO they aren't too bothered unless your stopping and I'm pretty sure you could find somewhere a lot nicer to stop for something to eat than Barneys I would of recommended Garys Muffins for their killer Bagels except the last time I went to AMS they only informed us that the toaster wasn't working until after we'd paid and on a cold windy/rainy/snowy AMS day you need something warm...Boner...
Barney's has a coffeeshop at 102 Haarlemmerstraat and a brasserie at 98 Haarlemmerstraat. ( http://www.barneys.biz/ ). I am sure your 17 year old would be more than welcome at the brasserie, soft drugs may be comsumed there but unlike Barney's next door, none are sold. An excellent lunch spot for all ages would be Soup Kitchen ( http://www.soupkitchen.nl/ ).

Thank you both, Boner and FlybyNight. I definitely don't want to break any rules or do anything not acceptable, or do anything that would be a problem for a coffeeshop.

If we were to go to the brasserie, where he would be welcome, and smoking cannabis is allowed, could he smoke?

Do you have any recommendations of good, inexpensive places to eat, in addition to the soup kitchen?
Very good but not inexpensive is Toscanini In the Jordann. No lightening fast service mainly because the pastas are made after you order. The owners son goes to Italy regularly to bring back Italian vegitables, so you are getting authentic Italian meals. I always try to eat here at least once during my trips.

Area: Jordaan

He would definitely be welcome in the Brasserie.

Last time we went we were in there on our last morning and this REALLY rough looking English family came in. Mum with horrible roots, Dad with british bulldog tattoos and love and hate tattooed on his fingers and 2 kids about 7 and 10 who had matching spikey hair with ratstails just like their dads. Anyway, the woman in Barneys made the kids special meals that weren't on the menu, so no problem there :)

I remember being quite angry because the parents were skinning up and smoking all over the kids.
Thank you all for the information. We can't wait for our visit to Amsterdam.
Hey Angellore your comment "I remember being quite angry because the parents were skinning up and smoking all over the kids" sounds like a everyday occurance where I live and it makes me really angry as well...Boner...
If anyone here wants to see what the scum of our country look like, check out www.chavscum.co.uk

Now you will know when to steer clear of them in Amsterdam. That said, they usually don't take trips abroad unless it is to specific resorts in Spain.

Hey theguest love the link it made me laugh lots and lots (how sad is it that I have or should I say had friends who would of made "chav of the month" month in and month out) thanx again for the smile...Boner...p.s. I personally call them pond life I know its not fair to the said pond life but...
Chavscum is a very amusing site. We call them Bazza's down here, but they are much the same. Everytime I go out I think Blazin' Squad are headed my way.
Damn, and people talk about fat Americans!! LOL!!

We all have our undesirables. My mission, and I've chosen to accept it, is to try to counteract the negative vibes emitted by the American versions of Chavscum - gang bangers and/or frat boys - and give the world a hopefully more positive view of my fellow countrymen. I'll work to change opinions, but I sure as hell won't take the blame for such idiots.

PS - seems Ali G fits well here.....(and yes, I understand he's mocking such idiots!)
