The French government is always after the Dutch coffeeshops, now they could use a few...
Their cannabis consumption is way higher than in the Netherlands, so why don´t they just shut up, mind their own business and join the Dutch band?
France: Wire: French Teenagers Smoke Joints As Often As They Drink Alcohol

PARIS, April 14 ( AFP ) - French teenagers are among the biggest consumers of cannabis in Europe, smoking joints as often as they drink alcohol, an official study of thousands of students from 450 high schools released Wednesday showed.
By the age of 18, two boys in three and one of every two girls have tried the narcotic - illegal in France - the survey by the French Observatory of Drugs and Drug Use ( OFDT ) revealed.
"By the age of 16, regular consumption of cannabis reaches the level of regular consumption of alcohol," the authors said.
Their questioning of 16,833 students last year showed that, by age 18, 21 percent of boys, and seven percent of girls, were smoking more than 10 joints a month.
The number of 16- and 17-year-olds using cannabis at least 10 times a year has tripled over the past decade, according to the study, which is to be incorporated into a Europe-wide report set for publication at the end of the year.

Coffeeshops would be much better answer to drug culture than this situation now, when smoking kannabis is still under table thing! At least then government could control also quality in some ways and most important thing, that hard and soft drugs wouldn't mixed together so easily!!
Now you go and buy some weed, usually too easy to buy same time also other stuff! Coffeeshops and at least in some way hard drugs wouldn't be so fucking easy to buy!
Yes indeed, it's same here in the UK. Actually I think here young people smoke more than drink!! Sometimes really hilarious... I used to buy weed from one seventeen year old boy who was dealing at my work place, and he never been in any pub, because he's underage... but still this guy is dealing cocaine, E, speed and kannabis.... fucking funny!!
It's quite common that young people smokes kannabis here like tobacco you know. So funny, at work places I've been, lunch brakes and tea breaks, they go outside and just smoke joint or two! Hilarious haha hoo
In the UK drug culture is a bigger than in any other EU country, I believe.
Here they smoke also plenty of that cheap "soup bar" and in the future it must be a big health hazard too...
In many ways also so sad... I mean it isn't any good that young kids smokes regularly. Certainly it isn't any good that 15 or 16 year old kids are taking at weekends more or less regularly hard drugs like E, cocaine or speed or whatever they can get in their hands!!
How much people use to smoke here in the UK... I was really suprised when came here!! I mean all people, old and young!
Why they do not allow coffeeshops here?! Stupid!!
I wonder if there are statistics that compare cannabis use in teens (under 18) in countries without coffeeshops (all others) and the use by that same demographic in the Netherlands. That might be an argument for regulation that even the arrogant french (sorry, just had to join in on the french bashing, lol) might not be able to ignore!

Such studies have been made and I have reviewed them.
In general, hard drug use in the Netherlands is lowest of all Euro countries. It is also far lower than the US.
Cannabis use by adults in the Netherlands is also lowest of all Euro countries. Adult use of cannabis in the US is much higher.
The Dutch adult use of alchohol and sigaretten smoking is much higher than in the US. Cannnot recall comparison to Euro countries.
I find it paradoxical that the most substance tolerant country in the world has the least adult useage.
I'll look around for that study link, if I find it, I'll post it.

An interesting theory, if perhaps a bit xenophobic.
I did a bunch of research on this for a paper just before my last trip. According to a 1996 survey, 4% of high school students in the Netherlands admitted smoking pot regularly, compared to 9% of US high school students. I work with a girl that went to high school in AMS. She said that the 'cool kids' didn't smoke pot. Their negative opinion of pot smokers was similar to how we used to look at the kids that smoked cigs 'across the tracks' when I was in HS (not too long ago - graduated in 1993).
And what of all the tax and license fees they could be reaping?
And how a cannabis shop seperates the hard drugs from the soft drugs?
Choopy, I just meant that buying kannabis from coffeeshops might be a little bit more simple... you don't need to hassle with dealers who wants to sell speed or E or whatever stuff they happen to get at that moment...
That way it would be more cultivated thing to do!!
Coffeeshops don't necessarily seperates the hard stuff from the soft... but in my mind, it would be more simple way to buy... you go in and you don't need to deal with any other drugs!!

Yes thats what I meant, I've heard Nol speak on T.V. about how the street dealers can intoduce a cannabis user to hard drugs, while the coffeeshops do not offer these items.
