Is Anybody Else Getting Bogus E-Mails???

Recently, I have been receiving e-mails from apparent bogus resourses, with 41k attachments. The first one I got was from "cheifs@greyarea.com", about a month ago. Then of late someone is using "dogbreath_nl@Hotmail.com" (Which I believe is NOT our Dogbreath)
Anyhow, I have a feeling someone has a devious nature and is using these email to zap you with a virus. I am not sure, as I have not opened a single one of them for fear of a crash.
The most recent I got was from smeone using "webmaster@channels.nl" with a subject line "Proof of Concept" also with a 41k attachment. (Which I believe is NOT Bas.)
So, anybody else getting these things???... I feel assure they are not real, but if for some reason they are, I am truly sorry. It is just with all the things going on, I feel someone may be up to no good.
Just wondering if anybody has any light to shed on this???
So far, none of the e mails you describe have made it my way.

That dogbreath hotmail addy was once one that I used. It has been dead for almost a year now... shut off by microsoft due to lack of use within a 30 day period. That address is still listed (incorrectly because I have been too lazy to alter the data) as current here at channels user lookup data. It was not, of course, sent by me.

I have no light or info to sehd on this monkeywrenching.... I will let Bas know about these shenanagins. Keep the messages please..... for now.

Im getting these types of emails from other sources, not channels... I think there are just a lot of spammers/hackers around...ugh.
Never suspected it was you DB, not even for a minute.
I have both of the last ones I mentioned, still unopened in my mailbox, and will hang on to them.
I feel for sure it is a flamer, doing some dirty deeds, just wanted to warn everybody else.
Thanks Dogbreath.
I get them from other places as well Fable, but it concerned me when I got them with these wrongful sender addys. Especially seeing how if you set your channels account to notify you of a thread response, you will get lots of emails from threads you have posted on, and may just open a bogus one by mistake...
So, keep your eyes on the file size, anything over a 2k notification is most likely something to be suspicious of, and most likely not from Channels at all. (Just a Flamer or Hacker)

Got an update: I had tried to move that DB at hotmail addy one and somehow it deleted itself, then I got that other one I mentioned from webmasters. I went to look in my entire mailbox and folders and it was gone.... How strange? It is possible I hit delete, but I checked my trash folder and the other crap I deleted last night was there, but not that one. I think that is a brilliant little smart-ass, but I still think they can be caught.

Hamster.........what type of file is it?

Hack. *** ? what extension?

WOOP!
I have not opened one yet. By file size I meant, that when you receive a notification from the real webmasters of channels, it will be a 2k file. when it is bogus, it will be listed as a 41k or 24k file size, and usually with an attachment.
But what kind I don't know, as I will not open that puppy...

Your email should list the kind of extension.

Send it to me. I'll figure it out. No biggie.

Of course I can blame you when I crash!

WOOT!
Bollocks, I am not sure how to send it to you without opening it... I use yahoo, got any suggestions???
Reason I say that is cause according to our IT guy at work, now you can just click on an email and the attachment can be automatic, so to speak. Now, I know I am not using correct computer talk, but you get the jist.
So, the question is how to send without opening it???

Try right click and "forward". I dunno about your IT guy. An attachment has to be download then executed. On Yahoo, your mail is on
hard drive.

I think. Like Hotmail, right?

WOOT!
I have been getting them too,,, just like yours LH,, from channels members (mine was specifically from buckofive and otis, no DB though) I also did not open the attachments as they seemed kind of suspicious...

I wonder what's up???

I sure don't need anymore computer problems....

BlueBerry
You know it DB. A must Have...
I know a guy who has a killer firewall and virus setup. He claims it can even capture a trojan horse, and it's real sender... Hummm, better look into that.
On a further note: You reckon I shot off my mouth and maybe made someone mad at me. You know, one of the guest posters that apparently was not a friendly guest poster, like some can actually be?????
Hummm, food for thought...

I suspect lots of us are... Do not open them BB,,,, I sense trouble, and as I mentioned a Smart-a** flamer/hacker...
I received one today off ecitableone at lvcm.com I have all sorts of protection on the computer and its been sent elsewhere and I cant open it so not sure if thats one of these bogus ones. I suggest that if anybody on channels is going to send another an e-mail then private that message them and let them know what you are going to do/send..

...Boner...

If this is the case then guest posters should only be able to view and not post.
I have received uncountable amounts of these types of emails over the past week,, and yes Boner,, excitableone is a member name here as well.... You'd think all this is got to be related somehow...

Hope it stops soon,

Go to your profile and change your setting to not show e-mail address link at the bottom of your posts. That's a good way for spammers to get e-mail addresses, and I believe they employ bots that collect e-mail from source code (which would show up because of the e-mail link under all your posts).

Just hide your e-mail addy and utilize the forum private messages to contact with channellites.
Creepy, LH, very creepy indeed.
No such e-mails here, but thanks much for the heads up. I'll look more closely at my inbox, definitely.

By the way: just for kicks, today I ran a 'google search' on my username and Channelite 'handle.' Surprisingly, quite a bit came up.

There is a guy, Cyril, who has appropriated my username and its unique 'spelling.' Uses it as all one word, with capital B and capital X.
Didn't think much of it til I read this thread, but it seems wierd. He joined a browsing service as 'BrandX,' and this was just LAST WEEK!

What are the odds?

Says 'Cyril, 45 year-old guy from the Netherlands, Appeldoorn.' (SP?)

Thanks LH!

I'll be watching...

I only posted to warn others. In any peaceful enviroment, there are always the troublesome lurkers. It should not refect upon the Channels Board, except more rather in a proud way. To think someone saw our mostly peaceful community as a place to make havoc. And yet, very little damage can be done when we discuss little tid-bits such as this. It takes a sad person to pee in a drinking well, so to speak. However, with the right small stone in a sling shot you can shot off his pee-pee, also, so to speak...LOL
Trouble is only trouble, when not exposed.
I'm the ghost of the pirate at Old Style! I am getting ou back for stealing my sword! You will be cursed until you come back and make restitution!
Once again, the trouble is all my fault.
Then Pirate,,, be it you,,, then so be it.
June 24th I'll be there, and consider "IT" on...LOL...

Man, this Pirate and his sword...LOL...
I must return it, or all will be at Havoc.

These emails are all over the web, and by no means isolated to this forum. It is some kind of word.zip file that is a new kind of worm. The funny thing about the ones we are getting is they are pretending to be someone we know, or many someone's we know...
So, as always general security practices should always apply anywhere on the web, and of course in your mail.

No great worries, they are not as smart as I thought to begin with, so eventually their days are numbered.

Best Regards,
LH
LOL LastHamlet!

Sooo...is this to say that your long-awaited return to 'paradise' is soon to become a reality, LH?!

That we will all further benefit from more ODD PERSPECTIVES???!!!

'OHHH BABY!!'

P.S. I can think of NO BETTER GHOSTBUSTER for the job!

Yep, the return to AMS blast-off date is June 23rd...
Gonna write a unique trip report about it... (I know, what a shock!!!)
I am putting a plan in place for a Summer Crawl, got a grand route, now working on the date... (Maybe July 1st???, not got it nailed down yet..)
AND, that will be the last time I try such an 'over-board' event. I just got to try one more time,,, and I am aiming at 20 shops in that day, so out with a bang I go.
Thanks BrandX for the kind words.
As for the Pirate, he is a worthy and persistant spirit, with the strength of the 'Energizer Bunny',,,,, he just keeps coming back, time and time again. (I admire that..) LOL...
Thank YOU, LH!

Your 'ODD PERSPECTIVES,' Blueberry's 'Wanna take a ride...?,' and dannymac's 'My Perspective' were all instrumental in my case.

You guys were my inspiration, and I am grateful. With 'Stories and Memories from The Dam...,' I offer you all the sweet fruit of my own successful adventure.

Apologizing yet again for any offense in my being MIA, I very humbly
salute you all.

It's those nasty virusess spreading around, could be that a (virus) robot
has collected email addresses from the forum and then sends out
messages to those email addresses with as sender one of the others.
it's a jungle and it's getting worse everyday. i receive more than
1000 spam/virus mails everyday. just don't open attachments
and maybe better to stop using outlook(express) too.
i use mozilla mail nowadays, but still don't open attachments and
you won't get a flew.
