New years Eve?

Anyone been to 'Dam over the New Year? Are the coffee shops and bars open on New Years Day or do they all shut?
Any good places to go over this period?
We've just booked the Brouwer for 31/12 to 3/1!
Most bars etc have a booking system and will only allow entrance with a ticket. A lot close quite early as the party is on the streets. Dont know about coffeeshops. Take ear plugs aa the noise of the constant fireworks thrown on the streets by everyone can be deafening.
what about New Years day itself?
Nearly everywhere was open on New Years Day. Although I did not get to bed till 8am so got up rather late. Lots of restaurants were closed but the touristy places were open near Leidesplein and Rembrandtsplein.
that's good. do the trams still run?
The trams stop running early on NYE. I believe they run as scheduled on 01/01. Also I believe New Year's Day is when they break out the historic trolley for a few hours. Anyone else have more info on that?
I believe there is no public transportation between 20.00 and 02.00.
Most bars and coffeeshops are open all night. The trams stop at around 10pm and don't start up again until 4am. I think you hotel is near Dam Square. You could watch the fireworks there or go to Nieumarket (sp?).

I will be in town at that time too. I am taking my brother with me this time. This is his first time. We will be in town from 28/12 to 4/1. If you want to get together let me know and we can figure a time and place to meet.

The hotel we are staying at is on Damstraat, a half a block from Dam Square.

If you want me to I could pick you up a bottle of Champaigne or wine if you don't have time to pick one up for yourself.

Hope to see you there.
NYE is a yearly experience for quite a few of the Ignatzmice crowd. The Coffeeshop scene is a blur after about 18:00,, would not reccommend hanging out in the more popular ones unless you stake out a seat early in the afternoon. Last year was not as crazy as years past, the economy has lightened a few wallets which directly affects the volume of Fireworks.
Dam Square had a great show last year, good music, good crowd, decent fireworks. If your looking for pyrotechniques,, do to the Nieuwmarket where you will see quite a display. Leidseplein has a good party as well.
Most big Bars require a invitation that can be purchased the days just before NYE. There are plenty of smaller pubs that have just as good of an atmosphere. Last year we got quite a show from Gypsy Nirvanna himself,, right on the Bridge in front of his Seed shop.

New Years day is a mess,, ecspecially in the small alleys around the Centrum, Central Station looks like a make shift hospital with people lying all over the place.

We are reserving a suite at the Krasnapolsky overlooking Dam Square on New Years Eve,, should be quite a party. Will stop at De kuil and Greenhouse Centrum first to get the night going.

Great way to spend New Years,,

Tot ziens,

Lanrac
