It's right off of Nieuwezijds Voorburgwhal(sp). Like Hobie says, right across and up a little from the Hotel Inntel.

If you take a 1, 2 or 5 tram, get of at the Nieuwezijdskolk stop.
You're right there.
Bett Boop is my favorite place for using the internet. Very nice upstairs room with 6 computers, my favorite is the one next to the window. It is always quiet when I go there, its on a side street no noisy trams etc. The bubblegum from betty's is nice and they have excellent coffee and hand squeezed oranage juice. Be careful of the staircase, not easy carrying stuf up or down, other than that I love the place

right on. It's the first stop after leaving Central Station. (this is the same stop for Homegrown Fantasy, Chocolata and Amnesia.)

The Betty Boop provides a very nice atmosphere with mellow patrons and staff. Try the hash chocolate drinks. Hmmmmm good.....and in about an hour or so, you're flying.
Was the first place I went to on our first trip... Also the place where I ended up leaving quickly and then pulling a DannyMac in the Inntel elevator (see Trip Stories...).

I like Betty Boops ... Its small and has some regulars . The selections are good and the staff are fun . Say hallo To Cindy or Debora , dont forget Kelli . I smoked the blue ice hash and their Blue berry and Bubble Gum select weed .They have internet upstairs and a good selection of drinks . You will find them across the plaza from The Inntel Hotel . I was their Just last week .Im back their this November . Wish I was Their NOW ...

Ah man, you guys are making me homesick. Its not my 1st or 2nd fav........but I always stop. Friendly crowd. Lots of regulars it seems.

I'm over due for a trip back.......

Doc
hi everyone i am going to amsterdam very soon and a few people i know said check out betty boop.
does anyone know where it is and is the coffee shop any good.
i hear the ak 47 is quality in there.

thanks
I almost took a dive coming down the stairs there once. Someone at the bar said that the rickety floor would break if anyone crashed down onto it but I told him that I always make sure aim to fall on someone else first.
Try the bubblegum there, one of my favorites. Lots of crystals...

The seating upstairs near the window is the best...be sure to go upstairs.

my first day of my first trip to the city my firends and i smoked multiple joints in that little square out front at a table and had great service, it started raining and couple of us went upstairs to use the computer, the mix of my soaking wet flip flops, the joints we smoked led to me falling on my ass just as the girl behind the counter said "watch your step, its a steep climb"

nothing like making a ass out of yourself in front of a shop full of starangers!

oh yeah and they have awesome frogs!
thanks everyone who replied im going on july 1 if i see you in there ill get u drink. lol

thanks
theguest, PurpleHaze, and I all stopped in there for our first
time this April. Really nice shop and well worth checking out.
We all ordered hash milkshakes, chocolate ones, and when
we were served we asked what kind and how much hash was in
them and were told that they had 0.5 gram of weed in them, not
hash. Strange. They tasted great, but we had all been smoking
hash (LOTS of hash) all day long, so they didn't have any
effect on us at all. They were 7 euros a shake.

The Super Polm hash (2g/12 euros) I bought there was
very nice indeed.
They used to have a lot of poisonous frogs and things in tanks there also.

Not sure if they are still there or not

Nice little place though

Yes, they were still there last December. If you sit very still, the little creatures will crawl around and check you out.
1.45 at the Post Office this morning !!

Wish I'd waited now but there ya go!

Well, it just broke $1.20. It's now at $1.1957.

That's the best it's been for quite some time.
I've heard rumblings in the international news lately that the guilder, and other national currencies may come back.

I miss those guilders....

it's at 1.20 today....
If you grab larger amounts (200 - 400) of Euros from the Atm, its in my opinion the best exchange rate.

sure do - seems like I put the same number coins in the slots at Sexyland just that they are 2 euros instead of 2 guilders - just seemed that things went almost one for one - ah the great days of over 3 guilders to the £!!
I've always wondered why the UK doesn't use the Euro. They're part of the EU aren't they?
We are part of the EU certainly but opted out of the change over to the Euro when the other countries adopted it. I personally would prefer that we were a complete part of the Union, currency and all, but thats just my view.

while the rate might seem good from an ATM - it depends on if you get charged for "cash advance" all my cards charge like 2%
I just use cards cos I dont want wife to know how much I spend and if I take cash out from UK it looks too obvious!

My account gives me 12 free transactions a month and then a flat rate of 60 cents (Canadian) for a transaction. 2% seems high.
Thanks for the website. It will be useful.

I was kind of hoping for a an impossible change, such as the rates changing to 1.5 Euro for the dollar. Haha it would make my limited resources go much farther. But I guess that's just a dream.

I don't know if the exchange rate will ever go to 1.5, but I would bet that we'll see Guilder-era exchange rates back, and hell, with the vote for the EU Constitution going the way it has, maybe even the Guilder itself, within two years. Economics dictates the equilibrium point of 1:1, and when its above or below the equilibrium point for a period of time, it has to swing back again to correct itself over the longer term. Since the beginning of 2005, the dollar has improved by around ten cents, which is not insignificant.
I was under the assumption that using the ATM would actually cost more than buying the cash before I got over there.
Well, it just broke $1.20. It's now at $1.1957.

That's the best it's been for quite some time.

Let's all hope for parity sooner than later.
All these fluctuations reminds me of a joke:

A Japanese guy is at Los Angeles International Airport, waiting for his flight back home to Japan. While he's waiting, he goes to the currency exchange counter to change his remaining dollars.
He counts his money at the counter. "Wait a minute," he says to the clerk, "When I came here I got more dollars for my yen. What's going on here?"

"Fluctuations." says the clerk.

The Japanese man stiffens. "Well! Fluck you Americans, too!"
Yeah, me too, danny. Wouldn't have missed meeting all those cool Channelites for anything.

But the E500 I withdrew in April cost me about $660.
Today, it would be about $598. That's a LOT of money.
1.00 EUR = 1.20895 USD (as of 2005.06.13 01:50:23 UTC).

When I was in Amsterdam in late February, the exchange rate was 1.00 EUR = 1.34 USD. At this rate, it may hit parity sooner than I expected.
I've heard rumblings in the international news lately that the guilder, and other national currencies may come back.

Somewhere around here, I still have 100 guilders stashed. I intended on exchanging them on my last two trips, but never got around to it. I'm pretty sure there was a deadline, though. It may have already passed... Anybody know for sure?

If you use your credit card (even if it has the ATM logos) they will charge you for cash advances. You need to make sure that what you use it an ATM card only! I made that same mistake a few years back. I was told that I could use the ATM's there, but they *forgot* to tell me that it would be in the form of cash advances. When I visited the bank after that trip, they told me that I needed to use the ATM card for the best exchange rate.
Chooby is right about taking out the maximum limits at a time. I was charged 3.5% till I found about the difference between the two. They charge me a flat fee of $3 US per transaction.

Safer and cheaper than any exchange places. Even the bank.

"Exchange rate ?"

Heh. This on a forum concerned with all things Dutch.

You've got to admire it, really.
Given the massive US budget deficits and the massive US balance of trade deficits, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for dollar to Euro parity. Sorry I can't be more optimistic about the dollar...hopefully I'm wrong on this one.

I am afraid that chas is right. Very well said.

The Bush administration has devalued the dollar with his practices. But, in a way, this punishes Europe especially France.

Yes Blunty, There has been about 10 cents US difference on the British Pound in the same time period.

I don't think the Pound to the Euro has changed much in that time.

I've finally heard some good travel news. Apparently, because of the two NO votes against the European constitution, the Euro is dropping against the dollar.

Does anyone know how far it has dropped, and how permanent it will be?
First off, it has only dropped a few cents, although in the world of currencies, which are measured in hundreths of a cent, a few cents can be a big thing. Second, currency price movements are too complex to be ascribed to one event. A slightly better picture can be had of the Euro/Dollar exchange rate by pointing out that interest rates have been steadily rising in the US which will tend to draw money into US dollar denominated instruments, coupled with the fact that the dollar has been at an all time low relative to the Euro, and at some point, all things financial tend to be cyclical. Thus, the dollar has been recovering as of late (i.e. trending up, or cyclically recovering).

That said, I'm not a currency expert , so if someone posts who is a currency expert, listen to them.

Given the massive US budget deficits and the massive US balance of trade deficits, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for dollar to Euro parity. Sorry I can't be more optimistic about the dollar...hopefully I'm wrong on this one.
If you're using dollars to change to euros, things are around 10% cheaper now than they were in April.

I just had to pay $504.50 for 375 euros. That equates to the US dollar being worth .75 of the Euro. Damn currency exchange places and their ability to set whatever rate they feel fit.

Cash advance on a credit card is always expensive. Taking cash from your bank account via the ATM gives the best rate. Taking fewer withdrawals of larger amounts saves further as the small (2??) transaction fee is based on number of transactions not amount.

the prices are one reason the Brits go made when we are away - but the Euro stopped that feeling especially in places like Greece and to a certain extent A'dam
Thanks for the info. Wow, $3.46 US for just a cup of coffee (1.90 GBP). We can get an entire 12 ounce can of ground coffee on sale for $1.50 US here on the east coast....not gourmet coffee but god enough for our office coffee machine.

Damn, those British prices makes it hard for us Yanks. Oh well, I guess I should have bought British Pounds a few years ago.

Thanks again for the info. Peace.
It costs anything from about £1 for a cup of cheap instant ocffee in a greasy spoon cafe to about £1.50 for a double espresso ot £2.50 for a medium-sized cup of decent brewed coffee at a chain or independent coffee shop.

A 'small glass of beer' - well, no-one really drinks half pints in the UK, but it would cost between £1 in a cheap northern pub up to as much as £3.50 for a bottle of imported beer in a London bar. There are places where you can pay up to £5, but that's just silly.

Most prices fall between these ranges. I usually pay £2.50 a pint and £1.90 for a cup of coffee. Coffee is not VAT-able if taken off the premises, but attracts a 17.5% VAT rate if consumed 'in'.

Around 70% pf the cost of any alcoholic drink is composed of alcohol tax and VAT.
British pound appears to be one of the strongest currencies going. Just curious, what does it cost in pounds for a cup of coffee (at a typical cafe) and a small glass of beer at a typical pub? Thanks.
looking good for us in the uk 1.44 and going up woooooooooooo
Well there is deffo a shift in the exchange rate. On our last visit it was stuck on 1.4 ans as low as 1.35 during the months since we last went. today here in the Uk the rate is 1.4411 ? to the £1.

By the way, how much are Ipods selling for in the Dam?
I'm hoping the exhange rate will hold good (for visitors) at least through fall. The better the rates, the more of the Dam I can sample.

Must be helpful to the Dam tourism industry anyways.
The US deficit has had more to do with the dollar fall than anything else as foreign investors wonder how Americans (Bush) are going to finance the debt.

Until just 2 years ago, the dollar/euro were on par. Now that is out the window. However, the Euro was valued at $1.37 last December and has dropped to $1.21 today. Unless the EU suddenly has a dramtic rise in its economy, I would expect to see the dollar/euro level out somewhere are $1.20 for E 1 and perhaps even lower. I'm an optimist though.
The rate is 1.20718 today :-}
the new one starts at EUR 308, which * 1.20 = USD 370.
same item listed at the american apple site is USD 299.

not knowing anybody at apple, i just asked my friends for theories as to why apple products cost more here. one answer was "apple thinks we're stupid." another was that here they are obliged to warranty the product for longer after purchase.

Taxes.

They charge me full tax, when I get things shipped, which equals the price of the product as if I was to have purchased it here in Korea.
I am sure that they are doing the same there.
It costs, $300 US for the 4gig iPod. I still wouldn't buy one for the fact that they are so damned big and cumbersome!
I have a 1gig I bought here for $120US. It carries about 200 songs, which is more than enough for me to listen to over and over till I want to download new songs. And it is about 2in X 1in X 1in. Tiny, but it has everything the iPod has except for the bigger display, which really isn't needed! Even has an armband for my workouts.
The 4gig costs about the same as the iPod, except that it is much smaller.
Forget the iPod and get yourself something smaller that does the same thing.

Hey come on man, you live in Korea where the most superior MP3 players come from.

iRiver
iAudio

that 2 alone beat iPod all the way, because they use hardware MP3 encoding instead of software encoding like apple does .
problem is that once you are into Apple all your music is converted for ITunes so cant then go and get a normal MP3 -dont think it would all convert back again.
That's why I'm buying a IPod Shuffle 1gig for wife - she moans I hog the Pod so get her something but has to be Apple cos that what all the music is - unless anyone knows different about the coding
Sorry. Not bragging.
I would think that the worlds largest economy would have something smaller than that available. Even if it is software based.

To tell you the truth, I love my Mini-Disc player. Big I know, but the clarity can't be matched by ANY MP3, wav, or wma file.....

The most objective bais of my conclusion are the gorgeous replicas proliferated around The 'Dam.

am I right that all parks would "allow" smoking? certainly that has always been the case with Vondel - I was told (by a resident of Dam) that the parks are the only non-coffeeshop venues that you can smoke without causing offence and looking like a tourist
I'm with Hammer on this one. Why not venture to some other interesting places? For example, you could check out 'het Ballonetje, an excellent coffeeshop at Roetersstraat 12, then head over to the nearby Oosterpark, or even the Troppenmuseum if you feel like it.

For the Sarphatipark you could go to Yo-Yo (2e Jan van der Heijdenstraat 79) for some organic weed or one of the other coffeeshops in the Pijp neighborhood. Katsu is right on the edge of the park, so that's a good pick.

How long will you be there for this trip?
How long will your visit be? Three trips and only one so-so coffeeshop? Why don't you go to all three of your park possibilities? Frankendael Park as well. Get out and discover! There is so much more.
Take yourself south and head to Beatrixpark, very local feel to it and quite a pleasant area to wander!

I knew someone who used to work at Barneys and by all accounts the guy who ran it was a class A C*nt.
Barneys used to be great....but in my opinion has gone downhill over the past few years. It is a place that is much too interested in money.......hell everyone deserves to be able to make a living, but I think it is overpriced.

I have bought quite a lot of gear from Central over the years and would be hard pushed to find anything poor to say about the place. Sure there are places that are more comfortable, but the coffee is great and you will be hard pushed to find better deals on the gear for your euro.

I have never been a big fan of Barneys but it seemed to me that 4-6 years ago you heard nothing but raves about the place. Now just the opposite.

So where they ever really good? Or just hype?

Doc
If you happen to prefer sativa strains of weed, as I do.....

Central has always had a weak staiva selection. Barney's Breakfast Barf has a pretty good sativa selection.

That is the ONLY advantage I see in Barney's.

And, as just posted, the service (and food) are highly variable. Expect piss poor service at Barney's. About on the same level of service one finds at Gray Area.

Keep your expectations low for Barney's, and you will probably still be disappointed.

Always has been, probably always will be.

Dogbreath :-)

I've been to Barney's 3 times and have always had a good experience. The first time I went with my wife in 2000, it was totally packed but they immediately seated us at the counter and a friendly Irish girl served us our (good but greasy) meals and I tried their fantastic Helter Skelter hash. The 2nd time was in 2002 and it was pretty quiet. Good service no problem. Made a brief purchase stop in there with Otis & co in March of 2004. when we picked up some 'Barney Rubble' hash (I have to say I preferred the Helter), and the 3rd time, just this past December, my friend and I ate in the dining area next door to the one with the weed counter, and we were either the only ones in there or nearly the only ones in there. Good service and the place has a much nice ambience than next door.

I have no complaints with Barney's, and I can't imagine what everyone's service/weed/food gripes are. Can anyone give some examples of how they were treated badly or examples of bad food or weed?
I will be arriving on the 30th for nine days and all the other times I have always made Barneys my first stop but like many others I have been going off the place after my last couple of visits. To much pushing "Cup Winners" and the prices seem to go up every time I visit. I have seen a lot of recommendations for Central Coffeeshop and would like to know what is the best to buy there?
Thanks
I'd say hit Central over Barneys any time and although I only tried 2 strains (PP - 2.4 g's for ?12.5 which was nice but needed to be a little drier to smoke as a pure J and Red Hair 2.5 g's for ?12.5 which was very tasty, sweet and strong and smoked extremley well as a pure J) - The time I was there a local came in and asked for something in Dutch which turned out to be White Widow which looked very, very nice - maybe next time!

...Boner...
Central hands down!

I have been to Barney's a lot of times and used to rank it up there as one of my favorite shops. No more.

There have been incidents of poor service and over priced gear in the past but the last time I was there we had to ask at least 3 times over a 30 minute period for the damn check so we could leave.

One of my pet peeves in restaurants here is when I am held hostage for the check and it was really about 30 minutes. James just kept saying he would get it and to have a seat and he never did. I almost got the impression he was trying to piss us off.

In their defense, it was busy and the quality of the gear at Barney's is usually good, but not any better than Central and much more expensive.

Central was my first stop last trip and will always be my first stop if I have an early morning flight.
Who's Barney?!!!

A dead dog....
central everytime.balls to barneys.
FINALLY,there is smart people out there.
To many people on here think if they say Barney's is CRAP they'll go to Hell.
This thread proves thats not the case.
Thanks guys.
I keep hearing that "going to Hell" claim but I'm not sure what you base it on. There is certainly no shortage of complaints about Barney's service and atmosphere on here. I'm sure that for the last couple of years the comments about Barney's on Channels have been overwhelmingly negative.
I'm sorry....my bad. You're right. I think I may have thrown the GA claim in with the BBB claim. I don't think you're the only one that has pointed out what they thought was a pro-Barneys bias though.

I don't argue anyway. I discuss. Tomatoes are too simple though. How come you guys in the UK can't pronounce Eggplant right. I don't see how you come up with OW-BURR-JEAN out of that.
Barney's ONLY claim to fame is the opening hour. There is absolutely no other reason to gp there for gear or food..

Pa
I base it on the fact its only recently I've personally read posts saying bad things bout the place,I've always thought it was.And couldn't understand the hype about the place.
Thats what i base it on.ok
Just an opinion m8,if your lookin for an argument lets make it bout something else ,rather than the hole which is Barney's.
Maybe something like how do u pronounce tomato.
lol
I take it when u say u 'keep' hearing the claim ,thats based on 2-3 posts of mine.Tho i think i've said it more bout the G.A.
Sorry bout that,i'll try harder.
Central. Very nice 5 gram deals and much better than Barneys. Even the food there is better. Know why? Cause they don't serve any!

Peace-

A couple of years back the best weed in Amsterdam IMO was Barneys Sweet Tooth but the place has gradually gone down hill due to its popularity!

...Boner...
I'll get accused of saying this before and i have. But even if it had the best weed in the world i wouldn't go ,if they treat u like shit and the place is as crap as it is.

Central is an awesome first and last stop whenever you're dealing with Centraal Station. I can vouch for the Jack Herer, Red Bud and White Widow as being top quality back in May.

BTW, the Sweet Tooth from CS Highway in the RLD was awesome this past May as well. Definitley an ass kicker, covered in crystals.

Who's Barney?!!!
Try a "Wake & Bake" at Abraxas
there's definitely better shops and deals out there, but I've got no complaints about Barney's. Went there last with my girl in 2002 and had Sweet Tooth and Morning Glory which were both awesome. Took it two doors down to the braisserie and smoked it with a big ass Amstel, wanted Guiness though, thought they were supposed to be Irish or something? Bartender shared some Mekong haze with us that was delicious, never made it back for some though.
Yes, Central over Barney's everytime.

Their Super Polm hash (2.5g/12.50 euros) was
truly excellent in April!
...and there is no friggin on my muscle car! lol

LOL,
Nice 1 mate.
It sounds fair enough, and I just might do this instead - it was my mistake, I thought that Central opened at 0800. Actually, I might as well ping Nemisis about it, since I saw this on his map.
Before I began reading this thread, Barneys was the first place I was planning on visiting, mainly because it seems to be the only place open at 0700, and with my plane arriving earlier than that it seemed like a good early choice for a fair breakfast.

After reading all the posts here, as an ex-waiter for many years in cafes/restaurants in my hometown, I think I'll probably just hang around Dam square untill Central opens, unless I find a respectable place with some decent breakfast that opens earlier than that.

I waited for a fair amount of people to post their experiences before I change my mind - thanks guys, you probably saved me from a bad experience on my first moments in the city :)
I've probably been there 5 times. Each time was for an early morning smoke and breakfast. It may seem like I'm a glutton for punishment by giving 'em 5 tries but I realize places can have bad days and bad employees so I tried my best to see if they could live up to their reputation of days past. My experience there was about the same each time. Weed dealer: informative, pleasant and helpful. Food: greasy, flavorless (yes I had the cheeseless cheese omelette too). Food Service: outright sad, very slow service to take my order, to get my food and to get missing fork. It really seemed like they only offered food for an excuse to get people in early but didn't really want you there except to buy the weed and get out as quick as possible. It would have been easier to get out quicker if I didn't have to wait so long for everything. The grease on my omelette had cogealed by the time I got my fork to eat it with on one trip.

They won't get a 6th visit unless they change ownership.
I should have expanded on my previous post.

A few years ago, Barneys had a great reputation - but was reletavely unknown and mainly had a crowd of locals, ex-pat UKers and a few tourists.
It was more like a truckers cafe than a CS Eaterie!
The breakfasts were massive (a traditional English style fry up with not as much choice) and they were very reasonably priced.
The smoke choice was limited, but what was there was good quality and sensibly priced.

The place changed hands a few years ago.
The new owner has changed the food menu with a corresponding hike in price (the Euro didn't help either). The service I have encountered has varied from reasonable to rank bad - once when there with my GF they simply failed to process our food order and we had to wait almost an hour to eat.
They have expanded the range of smokables and have become prominent cup winners in recent times....I'm not sure if this is good or bad as I haven't purchased there for years, last time I was there it all seemed over priced IMO.

As I said previously, everyone has a right to make a living - but I think the place has changed for the worst and it seems just now to be a canna cup chasing, marketing exercise intent on sucking money from tourists.
There is certainly better value smoke AND food to be found elsewhere in Amsterdam.
Well, in June 2003 we started our crawl there and the food was less than desirable (greasy has already been mentioned, couldn't find the cheese in my cheese omelet, and a stale bagel to boot).

I must concur with the opening hours being a big plus though. Especially for this past visit in April. What with the troublesome daughter, Barneys was extremely convenient for an early riser, and a little over 5 minute walk from our canal boat.
Stayed away from the food, but the orange juice was grand.

I went there every morning and there weren't more than a couple patrons there each day. No problem with the dealer, he remembered what I had purchased (amnesia haze the 1st day) and made further suggestions on subsequent visits.

All this being said, I wouldn't consider it anywhere near being my favorite shop, but it was extremely convenient.
Kirikri - I am glad you have found the board of some use.

Central Coffeeshop opens at 0700 and has good smaokeables and coffee. I'd be tempted to head there for a smoke and a coffee, catch my breath and then look for breakfast or my hotel.

Another suggestion would be Pink Floyd - I am not sure what time they open, but they serve an excellent breakfast. The MJ/hash is also top notch, though a little more expensive than Central.
As a holder of a South African passport, do I need a visa to visit Amsterdam
Yes, you would need a visa. Check out http://www.learn4good.com/travel/groups/group4.htm for details.
