FOrget the guide books. Just go. Start walking or take a tram out towards another city. Get off somewhere and start walking around. The best places found might be found by you. Just take a map to let yourself know where you are.
Maybe rent a bike and go towards Haarlem. It should be a beautiful ride, especially with some spliffs made for the trip!
Peace-
seouleast This will be our 17th visit to Amsterdam, there are 3 of us in the group and for something different I have suggested we all pick somewhere different we haven't been before
1. A coffeeshop
2. A bar
3. Cafe/restaurant - for breakfast, lunch or dinner
Now the only problem is, I think we have been to most coffeeshops in the centre (our favs are Greenhouse, Rookies, Betty Boop, Amnesia, Nes, and De Kuil) so something along these lines would be great
Bars - im open to anything
Food - my partner is such a fussy eater and will only really eat beef and chips, so something with steaks. burgers etc, the other two of us will eat anything !! (we usually end up at the hard rock cafe)
So if anyone can help with any of my requests I would be grateful as we've only got 26 days to go - Yahoo !!
Thanks 1. A coffeeshop
Amnesia for sure. Thanks but thats one of our favourites, thats the problem, we are looking for someone new to try - this is going to be hard How about Siberie, Bluebird, Tweede Kamer, Dampkring, Rokerij, Grey Area, Pink Floyd, Central - all top notch and central-ish. There's hundreds more though, so I'd say buy your smoke somewhere reliable and then go a wandering. Ask the dealers where they recommend too, some are really helpful.
Bars? You can go to bars anywhere. Don't waste valuable smoking time!
Food - turn left out of de Kuil's door, then right onto Nieuwendijk, and just there on the right there's a lovely cafe/deli type place...the name escapes me, but all the de Kuil crew seem to eat there (and not at the average bakery opposite which everyone raves about, BTW you can take food into de Kuil, no problem). Does your bloke eat fish and chips? there's a chippy further up Nieuwendijk, and Barney's has fair plain food (but quite pricey). Have a great trip and post a report/photos afterwards for us. abraxas
the new ice bar or the torenzict hotel bar
the chinese on warmoestraat
best waiter in the world As I was walking out of chinatown last time I was there, there was place near by that is not on the ACD. I believe it was actually called "Cafe" Italy but it was a coffeeshop. Real dingy place but one of the happiest people working the bud counter I have ever met in my entire life.
I am sorry I can not be more specific as I just happened upon it with my girl. I am going to try and find it again. I tried the White Rhino there, and the dealer told me to only take 3 or 4 tokes and then put it out, and come back to it in 20 mins or so. Me being the arrogant american thinking because I smoke everyday that I would have no problem. I was wrong - to the point of me being stuck to the wicker chairs they had for almost an hour. The dealer was such a nice guy he kept bringing me oj's to my table because I was unable to move.
Long and short - try to find Cafe Italy near Chinatown. Again I am sorry I can not be more specific. If someone reading this knows of where I am speaking please list the street and of course if it is still open. I was there in March 05 last. Have you been to CS de Graal ? ...IF you visit the Albert Cuyp Straat/Market
Keep on walking after the market part ends ...right side of street heading toward Museum Quarter...Can't miss it ...
http://www.coffeeshop.freeuk.com/ACDfrmAZ.html The burgers at Restaurant 1e Klas on platform 2b at Centraal Station are excellent. Handmade, gourmet style burgers that your boyfriend would be more than happy with. The menu stretchs beyond burgers though, i've had excellent fish, chicken dishes and schnitzel there and their pasta and salads look good. Don't let the fact that it's in a train station put you off, it's not like the crappy sandwich and fast food gaffs that are in UK stations. It's a beautiful art nouveau dining room that use to be the restaurant for first class passengers. Wow 17 times and you don't know where to go? I was there a month my first time and I have that city down. I would take an hour train ride to Rotterdam and Play some disc golf and hit some of the cafe/bars over there....In Amsterdam. I stick to De Dampkring and the Tweede Kamer... The 420 cafe is nice and close the GCS.....The funny people cafe is also close to the GCS.......Good luck... The Burgers at pink floyd are phenomenal. Matter of fact I would order two. It looks like already have...

wee lisa,
you'd hardly do worse than check out web sites & decide for yourself by pure guesswork. Look at

But if you're going to let yourself be tied to your partner's monotonous tastes, y'all might as well just go to burger king the whole time... will save you money. Try It looks like already have...

Yeah, I was being sarcastic. Burger king is where it's at. Up stairs at The Old Church CS.
Come over the west side of town on Haarlemmerstratt and Haarlemmerdijk for different restaurants. Then go south into the Jordaan. You'll find many places.
Dag
TAK If you had read my posting you would see that the problem is we have been to almost every coffeeshop in the centre and outskirts and I was looking for somewhere a bit different just for a change, done all the dampkring, funny people etc, but thanks anyway It looks like already have...

Thanks for your help, I think theres possibly more out there than Burger King, was just hoping someone could recommend a nice steak house etc, I prefer to go on recommendation than reading reviews thats why I posted this question, we've got about 10 guide books in the house I was just looking for some advice
But thanks again abraxas

3. Cafe/restaurant - for breakfast, lunch or dinner...this I'm not good on recommending as I don't really care what I eat. I mean, eating is not an "event" like it is to many for me...so I live on frites, stroopwaffles, and take out chinese mostly while there....plus toasties or whatever fare in some coffeeshops/bakeries etc. I'll randomly stop in some places that look interestting as well.
Have a fab trip!!! I'm sure most of my thoughts you may have been too as you've visited there so much.
Been to Haarlem yet? You can wander there and find nice coffee shops and eats. I love going there. I tried the staekhouse people recommended here on my first trip there and enjoyed it.

How about venturing a little bit outside the centre? (And I mean a bit). Two very nice bars, for very different reasons:
and
't IJ is based at the bottom of a very large windmill (I never knew they made them that big!). It opens from 3pm until 8pm, and sells (strong) beers brewed on the premises. Very quirky, and a huge favourite of mine. You can reach it near the end of the line on Tram 10.
Ot en Sien is on the northside, so you'll probably have to take a ferry (free from the back of Centraal Station). I thought it was worth the journey, but possibly because (a) I had fun going on the ferry and (b) they had some beers I hadn't come across on tap before. Or possibly its a good bar.
For food, you could do worse than . Very modern surroundings for Indonesian and Asian food, which was a suprising change for me, as all (well, all five I suppose) Indonesian restaurants I had visited before had laid on the traditional fixtures fittings and clothes. hell yeah, at the risk of repeating myself. my favorite, de nachtwacht. at rembrandtplein/thorbeckeplein, on the corner of reguliersdwarsstraat. i haven't found anything to beat it. try the tournedos rare with gepofde aardappel, anyway that's my favorite. they also have highly acclaimed spare ribs, and the sate is good too. the owner is nico. cat's name is baco. staffed by some real nice people, some of them family.
love
s g collins I've been to "the dam" 14 times & done most of the museums & tourist stuff. Now I look for one time shows & events....check various web sites for what's going on.
