From the Leidseplein...

Morning all.

Having visited Amsterdam enough to have bored of the very centre, the last few visits I have stayed close to the Jordaan which I found to be a nice area for a pootle around on my bike.

This time I will be staying on Korte Leidsestraat and I havent really stayed near the Leidseplein before.

So my question is, to get away from the hubub of the big square with its traffic and tourists, where are the nooks and crannies round there?
a pootle, eh?
I think you will like the Leidseplein area. I have stayed there several times and will be there again for most of December. I can't remember exact street names but once you are there you will find many nice places just by wandering. There is a great Belgian pub called Zotte quite close that is impossible for me to tell you how to get there but as they say "It's easy the second time". Anyway, great food and if you like beer they have maybe 200 different ones. Lots of great pubs, shops and of course coffeeshops. Hope this helps a bit, I'm sure you'll have a good time though.
I've stayed down there a few times, and it is nice... and you never have far to walk to find dinner :)

No sensible advice I'm afraid, but you will like it there, I'm sure :)
It is still a bit of a tourist area but has more local feel to it. There are some nice art galleries and antique shops in the area around Speigelgracht area and small streets that do lead into the Leidesplein.

To me, it is less touristy than the Central station area for sure.

I like this area myself and am planning to walk to it next Friday eve or Sat.
I used to stay at a small hotel on the street right behind the Marriot on Leidseplein called Roemmer Vischer (spelling might be off) and it was great. I was a block off Leidseplein but had quiet nights, the nights I made it back to the room that is.

Having all the transportation options at Leidseplein makes it a good place to stay, plus I love to gamble so the casino being there is great for me.

The Owl, Terdam, Hestia and Roemer are all on Roemer-Visserstraat behind the park and the Marriott. A good location indeed.

Peace
