Visiting Amsterdam alone

Hi, I am visiting Amsterdam alone for a couple of days in July. Any suggestions of a good area to stay in? I want to be walking distance from the centre but not necessarily staying right in the centre. When I return to the hotel I want to feel that I'm safe walking alone.

Although I've been once before I don't know whether I should be looking at west or east Amsterdam. I stayed virtually on Dam Square last time which was nice but would like somewhere a little bit further away.

Also is there anywhere I can go in the evenings where I won't look too out of place by myself? I don't fancy being confined to my hotel room once it gets dark.

Thanks

The Jordaan is a nice area both to walk in and to stay. Or anywhere within the Grachten

I visit Amsterdam alone most years (middle aged lady traveller also) and I stay at the on Singel which is just far enough away from the bustle of NZ and Dam but everywhere is easy to walk to from there

I like nothing better than to go walking along the canals in the evening but I might also go to the cinema or just sit and have a beer in a bar. I don't ever feel uncomfortable because I'm a woman alone

I'm not one for clubs so can't comment on whether that would be ok for you but I do know that there are some nice places where you can listen to some jazz

You might find some ideas that will help on my in the Entertainment Section

Happy planning!

:-)
I don't think you will have any problems as a solo traveler. uk*bag*lady travels to Amsterdam solo on a regular basis, I'm sure she will have a few encouraging words once she sees your post.

TTKU FBN !!

Many thanks both of you.

I will check out the areas recommended for a hotel.

I'm not into jazz to be honest. I would rather be able to go to a bar for a drink. Hopefully it will be fine so I can maybe sit outside? Will I look odd in a bar alone? Any suggestions of an ok bar?

Thanks

There are some nice ones on the Singel ~ around the Prinsenstraat/Herenstraat area. And yes, it's lovely to sit outside on a summers evening especially if you're on a canal or maybe on Spui

:-)
Thanks for that. Will plan my hotel around that area.

I have to ask, what is a spui? I can tell you're a seasoned visitor :-)

COME ON! It had to be said.

Ignore bollocks, he is the retarded mascot here at Channels.

Spui is one of the in the city and a bar there can be a nice place to sit, either on a warm summery day or in the evening

You'll find it half way down Kalverstraat, just past the Begijnhof

:-)
There is always the 1 on Dam Square, Euro Pub or something like that I think it's called?. Anyways I've sat out there myself once, seems a good spot for the lone person to do some people watching!.

There drinks are on the expensive side though, probably due to the location.
My advice is to frequent the neighbourhood brown bar where ever you stay. Dutch people are very friendly and it is noy unusual for women to go for a drink alone.
Am I right in thinking the Dutch brown bars would also not get her any unwanted attention from the groups of young guys who would be in the more tourist bars there?.
Yes I think you probably are Dave

Somewhere like in the Jordaan can be a really pleasant place to have a beer ~ and the stag parties won't even have heard of it let alone be in there!

:-)
LOL.

You find this funny Kingdoc?

And the post which is two above that one ; that's funny too?

:-)
LOL.
Anyone who knows me here will know full well that I'm not English at all

The posts offensive and what's more they were totally inaccurate!

Your national identity is not a matter of concern here. If you are not English, why are you offended ?? Let the english haters release steam whenever they want !!!!!!

My offer for the drink still stands. Are you willing to accept it.

While at drink at Tig Barra, we can discuss in detail why everybody hates the english and their England. I will also tell you some very very insulting sexual jokes against the englishwomen, which are widely known everywhere. I once told these sexual jokes to an englishwoman and she became close to tears, because they were damn insulting.

Do you know that nobody goes out with the englishwomen in many countries because of the stigma attached with them in the form of these very very insulting sexual jokes ?????
I find it funny when a stuck-up self-important schoolmarm scolds people on the Channels. It's pretty comical.
I presume that your remark is addressed to me Guest? You know me well enough to be able to say that I am stuck up and self important?

Did you actually see the post that was left yesterday which was very offensive to me? Maybe you agreed with the remarks in that post? Maybe you wrote that post?

:-)
I agree.

Take it easy, UK Bag lady. I know how do you feel.

I read the post yesterday, which was against you and I agree that it was very very offensive. Sometimes I think that nobody likes the english and everybody hates them & their england. By the way, you will not find anybody hating scotland and wales. It is only england which people hate.

There is no shortage of english haters in Amsterdam and they come from many many many nationalities including dutch.

Take it easy and dont lose heart. My sympathies are with you. If I see you in amsterdam next month, I will buy you a drink and then perhaps, it will cheer you up.

What about going to Tig Barra at overtoom ? I like it there because I am currently chatting up a nice bird there.

BOHannon, I am currently chatting up a nice bird in Tig Barra. Do you think it would be successful ?? Tell me a few tips how to "catch" this girl.

Give her all yer money...
Tig Barra does an excellent "Sunday Roast"....my fave
Hey BoneyMaroni, you remind me of Boney M, who had some very good songs in the past. I love their song, By the river of Babylon.

On my part, I am chatting up a bird in Tig Barra and I hope that I am successful.
Look at Paper trying to make the best of the situation by manipulating a minor conflict and using it as an opportunity to lure uk bag lady out for a drink.
What a sly old dog. Bag lady, i hope you're wise to the way this guy is trying to prey on you.
Peter Stringfellow has more tact than this!

Thank you for your concern but I'm sure I have no need to worry

He'd take one look at this grey haired old Grandma and run a mile!

traveling in amsterdam alone is safe unless your naked and confused. then you may cause a fuss.

WOOT!
With all the very, very bad things I do in the Dam, I don't know why anyone would ever want to bring anyone along.
