Vermeer - Maidservant Pouring Milk|
Last April 24th I had the pleasure of strolling into the
Rijks on a late Monday morning. The exhibit was "Glorie
Van De Gouden Eeuw" (Glory of the Golden Age)and I wandered
about in the crowd from room to room. It was my first visit back
to the museum since "77". One moment that stood out
was a period I spent in front of a Vermeer. Don't recall the
exact title of the piece, but it was of a chambermaid pouring
milk into a bowl. I stood next to an elderly Italian couple.
The gentleman was crying, so moved was he at the beauty of the
piece, a very small painting in its old wooden frame. Such a
simple yet powerful work. One needn't be on the smoke to enjoy
the aesthetics of a masterpiece.
I spent about 20 days over three visits this year in Amsterdam. The point is that I was not rushed. I was a repeat visitor of the same show and spent many hours infront of Maidservant Pouring Milk. (I would go early when the Rijksmuseum opened and often had many great masterpieces to myself for "long" periods of time. When others joined me I would move on, only to view the works from a distance and eventually move to the front of the Maidservant again. I also spent a great deal of time with the Night Watch.I made those morning trips the focus of a day. I got up early, smoked and absorbed "high" culture. If your head is into this sort of thing, smoking and visiting the culture Amsterdam has in abundance it quite a pleasurable and memorable experience.Best,Skully
