pronounciation of Ryks

Watched the show and I got that one right too!!!! However,
I noticed Trebek pronounced it 'Reeks' while I have always said
'Rikes'. Which is correct? Am I just a backward North Carolinian?
Please, no tobacco road jokes.

I guess "Rikes" is as close as a native English speaker can get to the exact pronunciation of the Dutch "ij" sound. By the way, the ij character is actually one single letter and never replaced by the y character. Also I noticed on this forum that a lot of English speakers are having trouble getting the "ie" and the "ei" right. The "ei" is pronounced exactly as the Dutch "ij" sound so for example "plein" (=square) sounds like "pline". On the other hand "ie" is pronounced like the English "ee" so that's why our Dutch name "Piet" sounds exactly the same as the English name "Pete".
