distance between airport and Amsterdam's downtown.|
I'm going to Spain in a few weeks and my connection flight
is through Amsterdam. I'll be spending 4 hours at the airport
and I was wondering if during that time I could perhaps go and
take a short city tour. But I don't know how far is the airport
from the downtown. Would someone please help me? Where could
I go for that short period of time, at least to have an idea
of how Amsterdam looks like. Thank you!!!!
This question always "pains" me. To devote so little time to exploring Amsterdam is a shame. That being said, you have just enough time to see some of the city. The airport is about 20 minutes by train from Amsterdam Central Station. First hint, don't get off at Amsterdam Sloterdijk station by accident!!! It is one station before Amsterdam CS. A'dam Sloterdijk is smaller and much more modern looking then Amsterdam Centraal. You will really need to "OJ" it through the airport to by yourself some time. Check your bags at the airport and you'll be ready to run! Now, what to you want to do or see in A'dam? By the way, in my opinion, the Centraal Station area is one of the least appealing parts of town. A good way to see the city is to take one of the canal boat trips that launch from right near the station. In less than two hours you get a quick overview of the city by water. (The city is laced by several concentric and interconnected canals.)Now, if you ask most of us, your time is best spent in one of the world famous coffeeshops smoking cannabis. One more tip, avoid the Red Light district during the breakfast time hours, its allegedly dead then with mostly shady characters. If you followed your nose from the station and walked you might accidentally wind up there.Next time stay longer, you'll be glad you did!
