    not bad at all...

stayed here off and on over a two week vacation in a'dam. very centrally located; friendly, helpful staff; close to everything in the centruum. small rooms and bathrooms, but a great price. i did not find the noise to be a problem, but it was january...summer stays could be hell if you really need to rest. i won't tell you how little i paid, but i think i got a great deal for an en suite room in the rld. would stay there again. hotel the crown is right across the canal, and hotel the old quarter is right around the corner.

    good have been better..........

stayed here for the first time for 4 nights, having chose this over the winston based on reviews. staff on the whole are friendly and helpful. the room was pretty small (expected), bathroom was tiny (unexpected) with a temparmental shower that took 15 mins before it would continuously provide hot water. hygene wise, they are very good as they cleaned the room and bathroom daily. i ended up in the only room, in the hotel, in which the cable tv didn't work, not a problem if your out and about regularly. they do a good breakfast (continental) and they are in a decent location (3-5 mins from centraal station). now for the real negatives...... the stairs are a killer going up and it's like being in labyrinth trying to find your room for the first time. the noise in the early mourning is maddening (addicts, drunks & the homeless also seemed to loved the location!!) and those damn bells which ring every 30 mins and occassionally the odd quarter hour. if your on a tight budget with mates and your staying in the 'dam for 2 nights this might be your gig. if not, pay the extra euros and stay elsewhere.

    great location & friendly staff

this is the best value in a'dam. great location in the rld and a few minute walk to central station. the rooms are small but clean with bathroom and tv. the complimentary breakfast was also good.sure the staircase is a pain in the ass, but what do you want for 54 euro/night? overall, a super value and i would stay there again in the future. highly recommend this hotel.

    those damn bells!

considering the price per night vijaya was ok, just.although the rooms looked a bit manky and they were a bit small, the two rooms we were in had decent enough bathrooms. the beds were diabolical, two singles pushed together to make a double, which parted like two magnets when you wanted to 'party'. you need oxygen after ascending the stairs and preferably the help of a sherpa. the noise was a damned pain in the butt, not what filtered through from the red light streets but from staff and other guests, but to top it all off those church bells, sometimes on the quarter hour, sometimes hourly, and not just a corresponding chime to signify the time, but a full blooded ensemble.on the plus side the staff were friendly, breakfast ok and a great location. i'll pay the extra the next time to upgrade, but if your on a tight budget you could do worse than vijaya, but take earplugs.

good location and staff (horrible stairs)

my wife and i stayed there from 3-30-03 until 4-6-03 and we really enjoyed the staff and the location but the staircases are brutal as in many amsterdam hotels but we had apratment 2 which was like on the 4th and 1/2 floor and it was rough. but we'd stay there again for sure because of the staff and the location. also the staff was very good about helping us up and down with our luggage and they we also on top of cleaning the room as soon as we'd leave for the day everyday. recommended

    ok

well me and my huband stayed there for three nights and well it is small, but you do get your own bathroom and you have a heater and a bed and tv. it was pretty clean, for an old building. but for the price we paid i thought it would have been a little better. the price is too high for that hotel. but it is located around everything. the only thing i do have a complant about and will stop me from staying there is the noise from the streets. but if you are going to be out late and partying and want coffee shops near by then stay there. the staff at the hotel were great. my huband became friends with the guys.

    we'd stay here again

this place is centrally located, affordable, and clean enough. it ain't the ritz, but just try to find a room for 82 euros a night at the ritz. the central spiral staircase can look intimidating, but by the time the week was over we managed to carry down our suitcases like pro's. the staff is friendly and most speak excellent english. the breakfast was ok, and the coffee was excellent. from my '4th floor' hotel window i spent many hours watching people young and old walk without fear at all hours of the night seeming to have the time of their life. there's several sidewalk cafes where the patrons sometime burst into loud song and drop?/smash? an occassional beer bottle, but the streetsweepers clean up three times a day! the street noise can get annoying if you're trying to sleep (especially since it stays light til 11pm), but i solved the problem with earplugs. you'll also encounter a lot of men begging for money. sometimes you can ignore them; sometimes you'll need to bribe them with coins. but all in all it was nice enough that we'll choose to stay here again on our next vacation.

    central,safe and clean hotel.

my mates and i have stayed a number of times at the vijaya.apart from the hotel being clean and safe,it is very reasonably priced and the owners are very friendly.the only downside is the lowlife who congregate nearby (usually if you blank them there isn't a problem).

    great hotel

stayed in this hotel several times. it has a good central location with friendly staff. rooms are clean but can be a little noisy because of the hotels location. good breakfast, all for a resonable price.

dead near the station and red light district is the view from the window

friendly clean gaff but be prepared to get lost on the mental staircase when you're spasticated. actually the best coffeshops seemed to be a 5/10 min walk, but if you want good ones and 'flange ahoy' then this is the place for you mate. tiny tiny rooms - like my knees touched the wall in the bathroom when i sat on the bog. but altogher clean, (i took my bird) friendly and not too far to walk when your cabbaged. it's just a shame the red light district is so unbelivably dodgy during daylight.

    great location/good staff/good value

the rooms are small, but no smaller than any other typical dutch hotel. it is clean and within walking distance of transportation/ central station/ and it is in the heart of the red light district. value-wise it is on par with other hotels in the area. the no-guests in room policy is only draw back i can see. be prepared to do some walking to your room though....stairs everywhere.
