Note about sewage/urine smells in hotel rooms
I love the kap, it's the only hotel i've stayed at in my 70 nights (six trips). Once i was booked into room 14,that's the top floor room with the skylight but no windows. It definately had a sewage smell each time i entered the room. Remembering something i learned from staying in very budget hotels in mexico i just covered the shower drain with a piece of newspaper and the smell was gone. This happens with add on construction where there's not enough room between floors for a trap- thats the little s shaped pipe like underneath your sink that forms a water barrior to keep the sewage gas from your room. don't forget to remove the paper before turning on the shower.

Nice little hotel
I had no problem at all in this hotel. nice relaxed atmosphere, clean rooms and good breakfast. would certainly recommend it pete

There is a big problem with staying in a hotel room which has no en suite, but does have a shower. That problem is that people decide to urinate in the showers instead of leaving the room to use the communal toilet. hotel kap has this big problem. The room that i satyed in smelt of urine.

cheap and quite hotel
i just got back home from my trip with my bf in amsterdam.we stayed in kap hotel for 3 nights (room #14,second floor,a double pretty big, tiny toilet but clean, the shower door here is broken on one side but it's okay..).the good things about this hotel: quiet, very quiet area(sleeping is easy and cozy),pretty breakfast-room and garden(most of the time you'll see a lovely, cute cat walking around there!:-),it's cheap,it's close to the main city's attractions(leidseplein, museums, vondelpark etc.),direct airport shuffle bus available(just 17.50 euro for a return trip, ask for it as you arrive in amsterdam!go to the desk 'connexxion' before going out from schipol arrivals and ask there for more info). the bad things about kap hotel: the stairs(but it's a characteristic of most of dutch houses so..),the bed linen(not so clean and smelly..),the staff(reading all the reviews i expected a warmer welcome...but wasn't like that at all, actually). however, i'd probably come back there if i ever should go again amsterdam and i'd recommend it to anyone who is young, can't spend too much, love to sleep in quietness and is down-to-earth.i liked that place, after all!

a real rarity: nice and affordable amsterdam accomodation
my husband and i stayed at the kap for four nights over the new year's holiday. the staff were friendly and helpful. the room was comfortable and personal. the breakfast buffet was super. kap is far and away the best amsterdam accomodation we've found in this general price range. we will certainly look to stay here on our next visit.

twin of the asterisk, reliable hotel
weirdly identical to the asterisk across the street. kap is a perfectly fine place and much nicer than its low prices would suggest. if you want to be close to de pijp it's ideal. hotel staff ranges from friendly to utterly indifferent. i was there for seven nights recently, and had recommended it to at least four other guests who were also there (we were in town for a conference), and they didn't even thank me when i checked out. just 'ok, you're done.' well, i'll go back anyway at these prices.

graet base for your amsterdam visit
my first (very enjoyable) visit to amsterdam. stayed on 1st floor, so those steep stairs not too much of a problem. great continental breakfast and lovely patio garden in which to eat (we arrived in a heatwave). just 2 minutes to the tram stop, otherwise a 15 - 20 minute walk to the trown centre, though it's closer to the museums. saved a lot of money by buying 15 ticket 'strippencart' from the local convenience store. rooms very clean, but staff not quite as friendly as described by others. or maybe its just that i am not used to been asked for money (will you be paying now?) before getting to my room (this for a 4 night stay). just put me on the back foot from the start. all in all, good value for money.

very nice, big room, but watch those stairs!
i really enjoyed my stay last august and will be returning this year as well. harry and the rest of the staff was great and the rooms were very clean and the one on the 2nd story next door is *huge* by ams standards, with a great balcony and a nice view of the quiet residential street. a really great location for excursions to the park or the reichsmuseum -- dam square is a hike, but certainly doable.

relying on previous reviews, we were not disappointed a bit with the kap. harry and his staff were warm, hospitable and helpful. our room was clean and comfortable, the breakfast above average, and the location, perfect as described. almost reluctant to write this review, for we don't want the secret of the hotel kap to get out too much to spoil its charm and availability.

we stayed in the hotel kap last week.found it through other guest comments on this site. it was very homey and pleasant. and compared to other hotels very reasonably priced.we will sure reccommend this hotel to others. (though the stairs were a little steep after a long day walk in amsterdam) the rooms were comfortable, and cery clean.breakfast was a nice surprise and harry + peter (front desk employees) were wonderfull.

we stayed twice at the kap now, and enjoyed it thoroughly. for a 2 star hotel they gave great service, good advice, ever a nice breakfast (better then in most 2 stars hotels we've been in around europe) and for two star standarts the rooms are very clean and cozy. very good value for the right price. we will sure return. nick

nice but don't expect too much
stayed at the kap for 2 nites with my family. we received a large room on the 2nd floor: watch the steep steps! location is good, service alright, (asked for extra towel but didn't get it), all in all stayed in nicer hotels and got better service, still, the kap is a good value for your money.

Better Than Last Year
Mostly because of the time of year we went. Also, because I traveled with my girlfriend, we got a standard sized room with a large bed instead of the little steamship cabin I got the year before. Kap has also done a lot of remodeling and our room reflected it. Prices still very reasonable. They're still cool with smoking, too. The breakfast seemed more plentiful too than in the off-season. Greater variety of things to choose from. Staff friendly, especially Harry at the front desk. Only complaint was that housekeeping was a bit inconsistent. Was very nice, however, to get drinks or a pot of coffee made fresh most any time of day. Also liked the apparent deal the Kap has with a taxi service which will pick you up in a new Mercedes. When I got my ride to the airport, the driver got out and found me a cart for my heavy luggage. The fact that the Kap is off the beaten path is good because it's quiet and good for sleeping; also because it forces you to get out and walk to places which means you get to work off all the pastries, chocolates and other goodies Amsterdam has to offer. Fear not, because if you don't like to walk, you won't walk more than a block to the nearest tram stop.

Lovely, quiet, restful place to stay on a budget.
Just got back from our first trip to Amsterdam. We had booked this hotel due to the comments of others I've read right here and I was not dissappointed at all! Rooms were small but comfortable and the beds were great (I'm told we had new mattresses.) The location couldn't be better - a very quiet street in the midst of all attractions, but it's like you're in a protected oasis. Breakfast was very good, hard-boiled eggs still warm, lots of fruit and a cheese/meat selection. We also got wonderful treatment from Otto Kap (I think that was his name, but I may have gotten it wrong.) He recommended a romantic wine/cheese candelight canal cruise and a day-trip to see windmills, cheese farm and fishing villages. Both trips were wonderful! Will definitely stay again when we go back.

Best value-VERY quiet-mellow guests-great tram and nightbus connects
Just back from my 3rd stay at The Kap- over 30 nights now. I always sleep like a baby there, the 1 block long residential street location is very quiet 24 hours a day. There's a deli-mini market, brown cafe, bar, bakery and a snack shop in the 2 block walk to the tram. There's great tram connections (#16, 24, and 25 as well as 72 and 79 nightbus) with 13 to 25 trams/hour to Dam square (11 minutes) and CS. You can walk to Dam square in 30 minutes but a tram pass is so cheap. Good maid service with sheet changes every 2nd day. I like the mix of guests- very few college aged rowdies, more over 25 European guests. The hotel is cannabis friendly as long as you don't bother the other guests. Great Nederlander style breakfast with cheese, cold cuts, fresh and canned fruit, hard boiled eggs, cold cereal, toast, coffee, OJ and tea. Less costly if you pay cash for the room. Phone before 3PM Amsterdam time for best reservation chances, that's Harry's shift most days.

Needs much improvement
The hotel is situated in the right place. It is very convenient to everything. But the room was the size of a closet and the shower which i was told was in the room was actually 2 doors down from my room. The breakfast buffet left a lot to be desired. I found the Carosel restaurant, that is in the park, to be a much better place to start the day. They did not change the sheets during my 5 nite stay and never did I recieve a new towel either. As for my trip I did have a great deal of fun but the hotel could have been better. Please be careful about the park, do not go through the park on the canal side at night. I did on my last night and was atacked by 2 men. they were upset that they only got 50 guilders($20 USD) and I was stabbed. I recieved 22 stitches because of it. When I told the guy at the hotel all he said was that I should be more careful at night because that is a dangerous area. So watch out.

Close to it all, quiet location, 'convenience store' across the street.
The four of us enjoyed our stay in A'dam, and the Kap Hotel was part of the reason. Although we were on the top floor and no elevator in sight(yes the stairs are narrow and steep), we felt quite comfortable at the Kap. Both rooms had TV's with working remotes, Bathroom w/shower (plenty of pressure and hot water, even if it does take a little time to reach the upper floor), comfortable beds, and room enough for a couple chairs. The Breakfast buffet had a good and plentiful selection every day we were there. We were even given a nice 'tourist pack' of literature, including a cute little pamphlet giving suggestions for close shops and restaurants. I'd highly recommend the Hotel Kapp

Harry seems to be very popular with his guests, and trully so. We enjoyed his hospitality very much and also the directions he gave us about where to go and what to see.Bussy, friendly young man! The hotel itself was very nice too,we had a twin room with shower.A little small but very clean and everything we needed, with brand new beds put in during our stay (box spring!) We will sure return on our next visit and can surely recommend this hotel. Dave and Sue

Besides all the previous reviews, they have a winter-midweek-special that attracted us. Book 4 nights you pay for 3 nights. we did it last week and it was great! And they didn't cut down at their service either to earn back the 4th night.Breakfast was excelent, rooms very clean with every day service and every other day fresh clean sheets. All very friendly and affordable and a great location. We are planning to come back next year.

a room with no view
I just got back from a 1 week stay in hotel Kap. While it was really clean, and quite nice, I opted for cheap and got a tiny room with no window! Only a skylight! Fortunately, the skylight opened, so I always had a nice breeze in the room. This was fine, since I spent very little time actually there other than to sleep. However, if you need to see outside (other than the sky!) make sure that you specifically ask to be in a room other than room 12. I moved on the last night to room 2, and while the space was smaller, it was wondeful to be able to look outside. Breakfast was great. Fresh fruit, bread, cheese, etc... Overall, had a v. pleasant stay, but would, next time, insist on a room with a view.

Be prepared for the stairs
My wife and I spent 10 days there in late May. The room we had was very big and the bathroom was wonderful. Newly renovated with a nice walk-in shower. Plenty of water pressure and hot water. We were on the third floor and the stairs were typical of Amsterdam...steep. The staff was friendly and the breakfast was okay. We found a little bakery around the corner for breakfast on the go. Very nice place to stay in a quiet location. Worth a try!

best value, very quiet, friendly staff, revovation completing
Hotel Kap has to be 1 of the best values in Amsterdam. It's located on a 1 block long residential street. I had birds chirping outside my window. Harry, part owner and day clerk is a sweetheart. Think of the extra fun you'll have with the money you'll save staying here. The renovation was almost complete- private showers for all rooms. Good water pressure in all 3 rooms I stayed in. From Centraal Station take the 16,24 or 25 tram to the 6th stop (Weteringshans) and cut through the park forward and to your left to Den Texstraat 5B. Night bus 79 will get you there after midnight e-mail me with any questions about The Kap or Amsterdam. I'm a single night life loving bachelor. Phone for best reservation chances. Summer 2000 is filling up fast.

Good Deal, Comfortable, Quiet, Close
It seems, from the other reviews, that the higher up you are, the poorer the water pressure. They were working on the second floor plumbing when I was there in Feb. I stayed on the first floor. Whatever noise and bustle there was did not get in the way of a comfortable stay. The single room was small, like a steamship cabin. Nice view of street from window. But room was so small, I couldn't just throw things about. I had to utilize space under bed and table as well as the wardrobe, especially as I accumulated souvenirs. I'd advise more hangars in the wardrobe and a few hooks or nails on the wall to hang things. Breakfast was substantial and came with the room. Hardboiled eggs were still warm in the basket; bread, coffee and deli trays always fresh. Being a sucker for Dutch cervelaat and komijn cheese, I would have liked to see a little variance in the deli tray. However, since the room and breakfast ran about $33 (75fl) per day, who am I to complain? If I did have one complaint, it might have to be the shared shower. Part of it is me, though. For a larger person there are a certain degree of acrobatics one has to go through to perform regular toilet functions. A great feature of the hotel not mentioned is the private entrance. I could come and go at all hours and go directly to my room without passing through the reception area. The breakfast room and front desk were together. Outside garden area closed. Staff were very friendly. Desk is manned until 11, soda and beer available until then at 3fl. Smoking allowed in room. No extra charge to pay with credit card. Bed was comfy. I slept well. Would definately stay here again.

Not Motel 6, but not bad either
Spent 3 nights there (Room 4 - single). Very steep stairs. Staff very friendly. Quiet and safe. Room was small but clean, and had no problem with common toilet/shower (except not much water pressure - plenty of hot water though). Breakfast was a nice surprise - food was good and dining room very nice. Location is good, i.e. museums 10 minute walk, and tram stop only about 3 minutes away. Bottom line - don't expect much and you'll be (pleasantly) surprised. At $35 a night, i'd stay there again.

a great promise for the future
I stayed in the Kap hotel two times now and felt very welcome.Talked to the manager several times and got explained that he took the hotel over just 1 1/2 years ago and that they are rebuilding it (every room a private shower, new carpeting etc etc, should be done within half a year)The location is just perfect, everything in walking distance in the centre, and still a very quiet place.I trveled all through Europe and can say this hotel is not expensive and has the greatest breakfast. Can't wait to return after the rebuild. It's an old Amsterdam house (that's why some rooms are small, smaller, smallst)with a great future if they continue like this, which I think they will..

CHEAP - DO NOT EXPECT MUCH
If you stay here just reapeat this mantra '...it is inexpensive..all hotels in Amsterdam are overpriced...good location...' This is at best a 1.5 star hotel. The only reason that is is not a 1 star is that it is in a quiet, nice location. I have stayed here in two differnt rooms. One was hardly more than a closet. The tiny shared showers were moldy with stanading water on the floor at all times. I felt more dirty when I left the shower then when I originally went in. The other room was a big one but pretty dumpy. Broken light fixtures, cigarett burns on the bedding and so on. The shared WC seemed to run ouf of toilet paper often. It had an old Dutch toilet that took for ever to re-fill - watch out for your neighbor's left over floaters! The shower room was bigger but the shower curtain was full of mold. Again, felt more dirty after leaving the shower than heading in. I have stayed in hotels accross the world and this one made me feel glad to leave. But it's cheap. The staff was nice and helpful.

Nice Quiet Hotel
My husband and I recently stayed at this hotel. We couldn't tell whether the owners were friendly or not as they never spoke, at least not to us. The room was large (#8), spartan furnisings but the bathroom was clean. Sure, they had plenty hot water, if you could get any pressure, at least more than a trickle. However, the hotel was centrally located and very, very quiet which was great. The food was delicious and the breakfast garden was nice. Thought it definitely was worth the price.

The Hotel Kap is much better than the rest
I just got back from Amsterdam about two weeks ago and I stayed at the Kap. Trust me when I say that this place is worth the money. The people running the place make you feel welcome the moment you walk in the door. I stayed in room #4. It was great. Plenty of sunshine coming through the huge windows and double doors that open to reveal a small terrace. Plenty of towels, bathroom is big and there was no limit to the hot water. Very spacious! The all-you-can-eat breakfast is great! There was a small breakfast garden too. Good location; very short walk to the Tram lines. I made the mistake and paid more money elsewhere. Stay here; I will next time I'm in town. This place is nicer than many American hotels. Very clean. Only one drawback- the stairs are incredibly steep, but I walked up them with a huge backpack without falling so you can too.
