I will never stay there again
Careless and clumsy porters, management that brush you off with excuses. I was asked whether i would like my items to be taken to the room by the porter, to which i said yes ( unfortunately ). I was left with £450.00 worth of damage and when i contacted the management they brushed me off with excuses and said that they take no responsibility for lose or damage which is a joke as it's there staff that course the damage. the rooms are also to hot and do not have air conditioning.

location, location, location
the die port van cleve is a great place to stay. first of all it's easy to get to via the klm shuttle from schiphol. once you're there, it's near dam square and all the in-town transportation, just three steps and your on your way to the rijksmuseum or whatever, but don't forget your strippenkaart. the bar on the first floor has to be seen to be believed. the delft tiles and ambiance can't be beat. the rooms are good, but the private bathrooms are class 'a!' the beds are just o.k., but i'm not in amsterdam to spend a lot of time in my bed. you have two (2) elevators to get you from the ground to your room. the staff are friendly and very helpful.

sorry...it was just ok
overpriced, steep stairs, the furnishings were worn and overall the room was blah. but the loacation was great and the staff was pretty nice. still, i find it hard to believe this was the best value for my he area. i would try somewhere else next time.

great hotel in great location
this is a gem of a hotel in a great location, just off dam square next to magna plaza, a short walk from the anne frank house and the jordaan, with a tram stop right in front that will take you straight to the museums. the staff was considerate and helpful, and the bar 'die blauwe parade' was a great place to have a beer and a gin and watch the world go by. we flew into schiphol and stayed here two nights on the front end of our trip, one night on the back end. the first stay, we were given a huge corner suite on the newly refurbished 6th floor with a panoramic overview of the city. the second stay, we were given a somewhat smaller but still wonderful room on the second floor with french doors overlooking n.z. voorburgwal. try not to pay full price; we were able to knock 60 euros off per night by asking for the special offer advertised on channels. i'd give the place 5 stars, but there is no air conditioning and we happened to be there on two 90+ f days (they do have fans, but we asked too late). we'd definitely stay there again.

safe, clean, and close to some fun attractions.
i enjoyed my breif stay at the die port can cleve. it was close enough to easily walk to the red light district and several cofeeshops. i think i had one of the larger rooms (maybe it is called a deluxe or something like that). it was on a corner if i remember correctly. my visit was in april 2000. so, things may have changed, but i'm guessing that if you're looking for a safe, clean, reasonably priced room with a private bath/shower you'll be happy enough with this hotel. i was happy with it, but then again i was only there long enough to shower and sleep.

snotty rip off artists
c'mon gretchen.there are plenty of places in the dam that are better for a lot less money.the kraz is cheaper and in a much better location for beeing close to things.everyone weather american or not seeks value for their money,i refuse to believe europeans just accept a sorry room because thats the way it is,cause it ain't.shop around before you make a choice of a hotel in amsterdam.there are plenty of places just as nice as the die port for less money.

very comfortable. great location, great food and reasonable price.
u.s. travellers will be disappointed if they expect the luxuries of a major u.s. hotel chain. however, of the several places i've stayed in europe, this was by far the most comfortable. it is within walking distance of the train station, and only a short trainride from the airport. my room on one of the upper floors was small, but very clean, and had a nice view. the private full bath was absolutely luxurious compared to the shared shower/toilet facilities available at higher-priced places i'd stayed visited in the uk. the staff were friendly and accomodating, and the breakfast buffet was phenomenal...the best selection of fresh breads, fruit, cheeses i've ever had at one meal, as well as the traditional bacon, eggs, pastries and muffins. next time i visit amsterdam, this is where i'll stay!

too expensive for a small room and snotty staff.
my wife and i stayed here during our honeymoon in april of 2001.we payed $240 a night for a small room with a view of abrick wall.the staff was not very friendly and the room was never cleaned nor the sheets changed on the worn-out bed.despite all of this the location is great and we still had a wonderful time.we plan to visit amsterdam again soon but will stear clear of the die port, might not be a bad deal if the rooms were $85 per night.

i like this place
went back to the die port van cleve for a second time. the hotel still has a fabulous first floor, especially the bar. you will love the delft tiles. say hi to the eagle and jackie for me. the rooms are good, the bathrooms are excellent, and the location is superb!! i would recommend that they put some money into the hallways and the rooms on the sixth floor. i've stayed on the second and third floors and been very happy. the 1, 2, 5, and 20 trams stop right in front of the hotel. the klm shuttle will drop you off and pick you up right in front. it's only a short walk to the jordaan with some wonderful cafes and restraunts. make sure you get to the corner of prinsengrach and prinsenstraat for some great beer, good food, and local splendor. there are also some good coffeeshops such as the dampkring, dutch flowers, and the 'little' grasshopper nearby. the first two will take a little looking, but its worth the effort. i'm already thinking about a third trip. when i go back a third time, guess where i'll be staying.

second time at the port van cleve
stayed for a second time at the die port van cleve. i still would highly recommend this place. the rooms, especially on the higher floors, could use some work, but the beds are good and the pillows are great. the bathrooms are excellent. the in-house restraunt is good and the downstairs bar is wonderful. you will love the delft in the bar. say hi to jackie and the eagle. it's a great location. right behind the palace and very close to dam square. the 1, 2, 5, and 20 trams go right past so you can get to anything that you want to see. it's also only a short walk to some good coffeeshops and the red light district. if you are a little adventurous, the jordaan is close by with some wonderful restraunts and cafes. you should make a point to get to the corner of princengrach and princenstraat. each corner has a wonderful cafe, the cafe de ii prinsen and the cafe vergulde gaper, great beer and snacks. don't forget to get to the dampkring and dutch flowers for some good smoke. next time i go to amsterdam. i'll stay at the die port van cleve for the third time.

THAY HAVE GOOD PILLOWS
THE PLACE ISN'T WORTH THE PRICE. They shouldn't have a 4 star rating because they suck, no more than 3. Great location in the heart of it all. They have such soft pillows, I bagged one, I use it every night. Right down the block from the C&H, can't beat that.

Stayed there in Jan 2001 and it was OK
I've been to the dam 4 times and stayed at alot of hotels. I found this one to be only satisfactory. The location was spectacular but the rooms were real small for 4 stars. I've stayed in 1 star hotels that were pretty much the same size. I did get the cheap winter rate so I can't really complain, but you'd be a real sucker to pay full price. Also the elevator takes forever, if it works at all, and room service was ssllooowwww and the food was cold. Oh and my friend was in pain all day because of their bad beds(I call them cots). Thin towels too. Great location though.

Stayed There in '99 and I'll Be Staying There Again in '01
Back in 1999, I had the pleasure of going to Amsterdam for the first time. I stayed at the Die Port Van Cleve. The KLM airport shuttle dropped me off right at the front door. I found the staff to be extremely friendly and helpful. The room was modern, clean, and well taken care of. The location was absolutely wonderful just across from the Royal Palace and Dam Square and within easy walking distance of the Anne Frank House, Multatuli's Statue, and the Red Light District. The restaurant was very good and the bar was wonderful. I loved the old Delft. The 2 and the 5 Trams among others stopped right in front of hotel providing easy access to the Museums, Vondel Park and other sites of interest. Anyway to make a long story short, I'm going back to the Netherlands in May this year and guess where I'm going to stay, at the Die Port Van Cleve!!

Very Nice at reasonable price during winter
The hotel room that I stayed in was rather large by typical Amsterdam standards and with high ceilings. It would rate up with a good to very good USA hotel and with the winter special rates it was very reasonably priced. The lobby, bar and resturant was 1st rate and looked like the very old original hotel environment, but the room was very modern. Dould beds did consist of two twins and I would have preferred a double bed, but this was minor. Good value in the winter.

Dear Ms Winter. We have returned safely home and would like to thank you and all the staff at the Hotel for making our stay in Amsterdam most pleasant. Without exception we found the staff both at the hotel and the restaurant to be highly professional and even morre important corteous and friendly. From the response to our initial efforts to make reservations via e-mail, to having a room waiting for us even though we arrived earlier than usual check in time, to the porter's concern when we were leaving that we do not catch cold while waiting for the airport shuttle, you all made us feel welcome. Again thank you, > Costas and Helene

Comfortable, pleasant, friendly and convenient.
The first time I visited Amsterdam, I stayed at Die Port van Cleve. Although my room was a bit small (they all are in a city where space is at a premium), it was certainly confortable, relaxing and peaceful. The most impressive thing about the hotel itself, however, was the staff. The reception was especially friendly, helpful and genuinely caring about this tourist from the U.S. whose first trip to the Netherlands was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. As an added attraction, their restaurant specialises in Dutch food (meat and potatoes and pea soup) which, of course, was both filling and delicious. And, of course, its location is central -- within walking distance from Dam square and the glorious heart of the city. My visit to this wonderful place was made more enjoyable by my stay at this hotel.
