Great hotel in a great city

My wife and i just finished a fabulous week at the hotel estherea. The hotel is a class act from beginning to end featuring friendly, helpful staff. We enjoyed our stay so much that we have already made reservations for 2011. The canal view room was clean, comfortable, and the bed was great! the view of the canal was special. Getting to see cyclists on their way to work and the many ships traveling the canal, we felt almost a part of everyday dutch life. It was nice to be located away from the noise and traffic around dam square yet still have easy access to the wonderful public transportation system that make amsterdam so much fun to visit.

    Hostile and unfriendly staff

A fine looking hotel, we have to say. But the staff does their utmost to make your stay unforgettable in a very unpleasant way. Being dutch it's very surprising that an amsterdam hotel adresses you in english. Breakfast is very expensive and plane. we had a dispute which we thought we had cleared when we checked out. But when we returned home we found out that the management charged our credit card for an extra € 150. Unexceptable of course. Finally we got the money back. We fear that other, foreign, guests are less fortunate.

A country house hotel in the middle of amsterdam.

It takes a lot to make me write any sort of review, however the estherea is not the sort of hotel you come across all that often. it has an english country house feel to it and to define this you need to stay at an english country house, it has the discrete feel of being there for you and not overwhelming you with it's prescence. the staff are so good you don't know that they're there 'til you want something. if you've never been to england then you won't understand its discrete family run hotel charm. breakfast is of a euro/continental variety and there's plenty of it. there's always tea (many varieties) and coffee on hand and someone at the bar to give you your drinks. it's right by a canal, overlooking the singel, and just round the corner from restaurants, coffee shops and bars and thankfully it's not the leidsepleine. ok, you can't smoke anything there and (as a smoker) i like this as you then get comfort, cleanliness and courtesy and theses are the best words i can find to describe the estherea - and if you need to know the price, then it'll never be worth it to you.

great position, tastefully decorated and very comfortable.

wonderful location, nice hotel but for its grandeur it was lacking the basics of air conditioning in the bedrooms, this would definately prove to be a factor when re-booking.

the feelings of a 4 star but really a 3 plus

th ehotel came with glowing recommendations, being a business traveller i looked forward to my first visit ot amsterdam. i had booked a number of rooms in june 2005 for business, and my colleagues. these totalled 25 in number, it was very good weather, and unfortunately there is no air con in the rooms which are unbearable at night, maybe that ought to be taken into consideration when charging the rates they do and the extra premium for friday and saturday stays. a friendly hotel yes, but the standard does not reflect the price charged, maybe time for a change, maybe the third generation ought to let go, cash in and let others run it, your time is in the past and well deserved, a wonderful place but lacking, you now cater for the run around europe tourist !! you will spoil it ! enjoy the retirement

my boyfriend and i stayed this week at the 'royal' hotel estherea. we felt the staff forgot they worked in a hotel, not beckingham palace. they have a 'no spliff' policy, fair do's; but they practically frisk you when you go back to the hotel at night. we thought the room was comfy and spotlessly clean, but this did not compensate for such a stuffy, formal setting

    it was an okay place

this place is great. the service is great, the employess are nice and the location is great. downtown is not the best place in the world but it is better than nothing.if you want to take my i would first go to the footlocker then buy some shoes.i came with my parents and brother. i didnt like goin at night because it was very cold but it was still nice it was not like the los angeles air, dirty, but fresh crisp air. the reason i gave this place a 4 star instead of a 5 star is because the television is very complex and the only international channel was cnn. it would be a little better if there was 2 channels from every well known country.

    a rip off

we stayed here last summer, with the help of the rip off tourist agency who recomended the place at a 'special' reduced rate. the location is good, but the rooms are trashed and not 4 star material. the staff is snooty and not helpful. i would not stay here again

    enjoyable visit

stayed here for 5 nights and enjoyed it. great location (spui area) and right on the canal. relatively quiet, although our room on the 4th floor was a bit noisy if the windows are open late at night. no weed smoking policy in the rooms, but if the weather is nice and the windows are open it shouldn't be a problem. great staff, very professional. free internet access in the lobby (although only one terminal, it was usually available) a bit pricey during peak time, but probably worth it if you are taking the wife or girlfriend. although unadvertised, they will deduct 10% of the room price for cash payment. recommended.

    not bad

my husband and i stayed there for two nights. the first night they put us in a room the size of a shoebox, saying there were no more rooms avalible. no joke, horribly small. the second night they gave us a much bigger room which was perfect. make sure you know what your getting. other than that it was a nice place, and the people were friendly and helpfull. i'd reccommend it if you have a good price. otherwise there are nicer hotels.

    A great hotel

I have stayed at this hotel for the past 3 years and will be there again on Jan. 18th. The staff is excellent and friendly and the breakfast is wonderful. Location is quiet and only about 3 blocks from Dam Square. I always stay in the dead of winter and the room rates are very much reduced from the published and internet rates - contact hotel direct to get the best price.

    a bad breakfast

nosotros pensamos que si el desayuno fuese mas amplio , podriamos ponerle 5 estrellas, porque es lo unico que le falla, ... ademas el personal habla muy poco espanyol i no se esfuerzan en hablarlo lo minimo,la habitacion esta limpia i es bastante amplia. we thought that if the breakfast was most big we could put this hotel five stars, because it is the bad caracteristic... so the hotel's personal spoke little spanish and they could speak it.finally all is good, the room is clean and... well nice to meet you!
