Went to amsterdam for a bit of fun with my mates but i checked up the reviews before i went and was well worried. Turns out it wasn't so bad. Maybe i got a new room or somthing but the decore was cool and the staff were some of the friendliest i have ever met. I defo recomend this hotel compared to some of the hotels around amsterdam.

    Very bad

I stayed in the groenhof in may 2006. It was really terrib le. Rude staff and a very lousy breakfast. The rooms were hot and dirty. Very small toilet and shower.

    avoid this hotel!

this is far below the 3-star rating. they got nothing right. the staff was unfriendly and rude. they made promises that were not kept. the rooms were dirty and poorly maintained. the breakfast was among the worst i have had in a european hotel. on checkout, there were surprises on the bill. parking was very inconvenient and expensive. on the positive side, it was conveniently located, but the flaws render that convenience irrelevant.

a depressing hotel to stay in

i stayed at the groenhof a few years ago and i hated it when i had to go back there every night. i found the people who run it misserable and unfriendly. the first thing that hit me when i entered the hotel was signs everywhere saying 'no drugs'. i still smoked my dope because i wasn't going to let them ruin my holiday - they should mention this in the brochure and not wait until we give them our money before telling us this. while the rest of amsterdam was smiling they walked around with long faces. i will never stay here again.

    good value for money

we have just arrived back from amsterdam and before we left to stay at the groenhof hotel we read the comments on this site and we were very worried about what we were going to! the hotel is very basic but what do you expect for the price you pay. someone made a comment about the double bed being 2 single beds pushed together obviously these people have never stayed abroad before in a basic hotel! the rooms were clean and looked like they had been newly refurbished. the staff were very helpful and spoke english. breakfast was interesting with the same choice on offer everyday but it is easy to find somewhere cheap to eat nearby. we were pleasantly surprised and would definetely go back there on our next visit.

clean, quiet, comfortable, friendly and good value

i booked this hotel before discovering the earlier bad reviews but was assured by (who i booked through) that all was ok. they were right - i found the place on the tram 1 line near liedesplein 10 mins from centraal station. it's in a quiet street, pleasantly behind vondelpark. the hotel was clean, with very comfortable beds, a good cold buffet breakfast, friendly staff and, at 100 eu's per room per night, very good value for money. i cannot understand how it could ever get a bad review!

gutter or groenhof hotel? think i'll sleep in the gutter next time!!!

ive been to a few places in europe and have stayed at some very nice, inexpensive hotels. i was expecting the same from amsterdam. boy was i wrong in assuming that. from the minute you enter your room the stench from the toilets is overwhelming. it honestly made me feel ill. the beds are very uncomfortable and a double bed is simply two 'camp' beds pushed together. the manager does not seem to like the english - he was very rude at times and was blatantly making fun of us. little did he know that one of our group understood a small bit of dutch... i would recommend this place to the people i dislike. to the rest, avoid it by a mile.

two words about this one; shite and ............shite

this place sucks, bathrooms stinks of a interesting blend of faeces and cabbage, in fact it almost stinks as much as the rip you off attitude of the owners, the breakfast is crap it tasted like the leftovers of the guy who actually enjoyed the breakfast, back in july 2001.

this place ripped us off .....

very recently we visited this hotel. it looked respectable from the outside but the managment was dodgy. we went for a drink in town after checking out, but when we returned to collect out baggage they claimed we has stolen the light fittings, which had been carefully unscrewed from our room. knowing we had a flight to catch, they forced us to pay 100 euros for new fittings. the manager couldn't look me in the eyes, as everyone knew that the hotel was ripping us off for not leaving a tip, which they had not deserved because the service was dismal. the bar was practically empty and breakfast was a discrace. stay away from this con house!

not bad for a doss house

this was our sencond time visiting amsterdam and although we pushed the boat out the last time, we were really dissappointed in the groenhof. it looked much nicer in the pictures on the internet and our double room was 2 singles pushed together, with separate blankets. a word of warning for parents, there is a lot of majuana being smoked in the hotel at night. i would certainly not reccomend this hotel for families.

stay there made our visit to ams even more enjoyable

the little hotel is clean, comfortable and really close to the center of the city (practically walking distance, though you could take a tram if you insist). safety and great customer service add to the pleasant experience. the one time we made it to breakfast it was ok, though nothing spectacular. met some of the most courteous receptionists i personally have ever seen! i knew it was a bargain even before we went there, but definitely was most pleasantly surprised by the quality and the value of all we got. i am recommending groenhof to any of my friends who decide to visit the cosmopolitan amsterdam.

helpful staff and morning breakfast are excellent

my friend and i stayed at the groenhof early nov.'01.we had walked from central station checking for the vacancies of other hotels along the way...nothing.then the groenhof... the hotel itself is very nice and is located on a quiet street.perfect for those who need sleep.the lobby is decorated ,and often i was found lounging there watching the t.v. walk straight out the door and you are very close to the art museums and vondel park.the staff were so friendly.they would eagerly help us if we needed directions.also very helpful when we needed to call a cab or call was also handy to have a coffee shop right down the street. the breakfast in the morning was a huge buffet cosisting of ;sliced deli meats, cheeses, bread, toast, english muffins, soft boiled eggs, oatmeal and dried cereals.there was also milk and orange juice.dont miss breakfast!!! you wont be disappointed at the groenhof..most bang for the buck.

Friendly and comfortable with access to great attractions

My family and I spent two nights at the Groenhof hotel on a whirlwind tour of Amsterdam. The Groenhof has recently remodeled. The rooms are spacious, comfortable and clean. The staff is very friendly and helped us with whatever we asked. While the hotel isn't palacial, it is comfortable and well within walking distance to many of Amsterdam's attractions. Vondelpark is just a very short walk (across the street) from the hotel. We had a wonderful time thanks to the staff at the hotel, and hope to return to the hotel and stay for a more extended period.
