Good for hard of hearing seniors
First i want to start with problems will happen in any business. It is what you do to resolve those problems that separate the pros from the hacks. the rho has a great location. After that ? they need to step it up two notches. The plumbing makes loud noises all night with toilets running cutting on and off and the pipes clanging (quite annoying). The breakfast is ok. The place is basically worn out from the keys to the beds. Hasn't been updated since the 70's. If you are going to amsterdam to partake in the local coffee shops i would stay away from the rho. They have a total non smoking policy. In fact, they are quite judgmental about marijuana smokers. now this is one of the worst experiences i have ever had in my life. My last night when i went back to the room at about 8:30 to grab some cash and head back out the room safe wouldn't open (not attached and could be carried right out by anyone). O-k, everything of value i had in amsterdam was in this safe. I am diabetic and some of the medicine i take was in the safe. this is where it gets unbelievable. The night manager took 30 minutes to finally come look at my safe. He looked at it and said they would have to drill it. I told him i needed in the safe. He then gets belligerent and accuses me of doing something to the safe and that i had been smoking pot in the room (i hadn't). He called me a druggy for smoking pot in amsterdam. Tries to put me on the defensive when it was their safe that was broken. Finally he says it will be an hour before someone could open it. I can deal with that. I check with the front desk after about 30 minutes and the manager was no where to be found and flunkies at front desk are telling me it would be the next morning before they could open the safe. I told them i needed to take my medicine and also needed money out of the safe. They just gave me the finger. I couldn't believe it. I had to settle for the next morning at 7:00 when i needed to take my "big medicine". Went to front desk at 7:00. He told me nobody available. I informed him i needed my medicine and let me know as soon as someone got there. It wasn't until 8:30 that they would open my safe. My hands are shaking because i needed my diabetes medicine. The reason they waited until 8:30 was to wait for the manager so she could see inside my safe to see if they could figure out a way to blame me for it. Going up to the room she said that i smoked too much pot and that i did something to the safe.

Great hotel for the price - location is unbeatable
Pros: very central yet pretty quiet. Friendly staff. Free wireless internet. cons: room standard is acceptable but not convincing. Breakfast was there but nothing special.

very enjoyable stay-great location
the hotel was very clean, room was adequate (single); though no view whatsoever. personnel were extremely friendly and helpful. location was fantastic - couldn't be more central to downtown amsterdam. morning buffet was terrific. access to internet (in lobby computer) was convenient. restaurant two doors down was super. would definitely stay there again.

good value and quiet location
we stayed at the end of march and had a very quiet room on the top floor. found the hotel perfect for our needs and the free safe was ideal for storing our valuables etc. the fact a very good breakfast is included made this ideal breakfast is available until 10.30am good if you cant get up after a night on the town and they let you leave bags on the day of check out

the rho is a good choice

not bad for my first trip....
i stayed at the rho in 08/2002 for 2 nights. can't beat the location (steps from dam square). the room may have seemed a bit dark due to the bad weather during my stay. but i have no comlaints otherwise. one particular desk clerk was extremely nice, helpful & informative (which can make all the difference). the breakfast was one of the best i had during my trip which included 4 other hotels. the price seemed ok being from miami, fl as i am. i'm sure i could have stayed cheaper but all in all not too bad for my first time.

could have, should have............
had high hopes about our stay at the rho (was here on my own previously)and was expecting more considering how much they charged, but was a little disappointed. 3 of us turned up expecting a decent sized triple, with bath/shower, a safe, tv and enough cupboard space for all our clothes. sadly the rho came up short on all these. room was big enough for 2, bathroom was poorly air-conditioned with a dodgy shower unit. we had a safe that didn't work, tv only had two decent channels (bbc world & cnn)and the room contained a cupboard that had barely enough room for 2 people to use, let alone 3!! the postives were; the breakfast, which was good (hot & cold buffet)and the hotel is well located, just off dam square. the staff, in general, are friendly (especially the old gentleman who is the night clerk). i'd say if you were travelling as a group of 3's and planned on staying here, get single rooms instead.

a good hotel reasonably priced with an elevator.
i stayed at the rho and found it to be a pleasant surprise. it had an elevator and wasn't a two hundred a night chain hotel. the breakfast was good, as well as the service. i recommend it.

simply the only place to stay (if you are not on a budget)
been going to amsterdam every year for the last ten years and always stay at the rho. superb location on dam square near to everything, clean, safe, good size rooms, bathrooms, facilities, staff. special mention for the breakfast which is second to none. slighty pricey but worth it if money is not a problem.

this hotel couldn't be better placed, right on the edge of dam sq itself.it's a bit pricey at 145 euros a night but we got the price down to 130 euros and that was on aug bank holiday weekend (22nd-25th). the rooms were tidy enough though we didnt get the non smoking room we had booked. breakie was brill (us english love our bacon & egg) didn't have to eat again until evening. i would stay there again no worries.

great value and location
i just stayed here for a week 11-9 to 14. i had booked a single, but was upgraded on my second night to a room with a real double bed (same price: e95/night including breakfast). comfy bed. housekeeping done every day. spacious bathrooms (room 308 could use a new showerhead). had a wall of windows that let the sun in. minibar( deposit req.) safe, tv. breakfast was good. bacon, eggs, meat, cheese, cereals. the usual suspects. the staff was very courteous, remembering my name almost every time i came and went. location can't be beat. steps from dam square. i didn't see a/c, so the rooms may be warm in summer, but no problem this time of year. i would stay here again.

you got ripped off
if you paid 145 euros for a room at the rho, you got taken.

...yes, you can do better, but for a lot more money!
great value for money and a location to die for. as everyone knows, this is a walking-city and you cant ask for a better base than the dam square. typical dutch hotel, smallish rooms, a bit worn round the edges, nice breakfast. well priced, just got back, cost us 145 euros for a twin room. of course you can get cheaper, hell, they even got campsites for you if you really want to skimp, but imho its all relative. you gets what you pays for, and in this case its a good deal...

you can do better
i was there in the summer. my room was ultra small and depressing. it was hot. they said they had fans, but my room did not, and they wouldn't get me one, so i broiled. i would not go back.

good amsterdam hotel bargain
I arrived early and was upgraded to a larger room which was available at the time which was nice. location for the price can't be beat. room was large with private bathroom, nice, clean comfortable bed and room had safe and mini-bar (deposit required for keys to both) room rate included a nice breakfast. only issue i had was that the t.v. channels available were only dutch and one italian channel. english options were the cnn news and cnn sport channel only. though i don't watch too much t.v. (and can't understand the dutch language) it was a minor issue. i would recommend this hotel to anyone. also i noticed some really good winter room rates (195 fl. for double room - not per person! which is about $95 u.s.)

Reasonable place at a reasonable price
I stayed one night in March of 2001 and found the place to be fine, but a little worn out. The staff was friendly, helpful, efficient. My room had a private toilet/shower, the room was large, in need of a paint job, with smudge marks around light switches, doors, etc., but it was reasonably clean and had large windows which opened over the street. The breakfast included scrambled eggs, bacon, and the usual Dutch breakfast fixings. The location can't be beat, footsteps from Dam Square, but there is a fair amount of pedestrian noise during the day and evening, especially if you leave the windows open. Not the most modern facility, but a good value for the price.

I recently stayed at the RHO Hotel and can recommend it if it is in your price range. I paid 195 NLG per night for a double including breakfast. The location is central and on a quite side street adjacent to Dam Square. If you have a question about this place, then e-me.
