Very disappointed about the hotel
The hotel has a subsidiary wing in which the rooms are very disappointing. The photos shown on the internet site are not the reallity we found. the room was very noisy, just clean and the bathroom very brief. the price is however very expensive compared to the confort available.

stayed in a single room for a couple nights in sept 04. incredible value at 45euro per nite. it is to note that they have two single rooms at the hotel, and both are smoking rooms. however, i'm a non-smoker and let them know of that and they said they try to clean up room in that regard before arrival. i didn't really smell anything in the room once there; very pleased. thought room and premises were clean. front desk staff was consistently pleasant and helpful. cold buffet breakfast may look scant by usa standards, but if utilized properly can be quite filling and useful. i fortunately had no trouble here, and would definately consider returning.

worst hotel experience of my life
they cleaned our room once over a 6 day period. they were extremely rude and demanded we pay extra for having a friend stay in the room till 2 am... even though no one was sleeping. also they have charged my friends credit card for the hotel when we payed for it in cash. warning stay away this is not a joke

no frills, some friendly staff, some unfriendly staff, and good location
we stayed here in january 2000. the room was large, with a private bath, and was pretty clean, and located right off the dam. i think it was just a little overpriced, considering how no-frills it was. other places we've stayed, at a similar price, were much nicer. really nice, friendly staff at check-in, but the clerk at check-out was not at all friendly. typical dutch breakfast.

we stayed at the gerstekorrel at the end of may 2003 the staff were very nice and helpful, the room was clean and a good size twin, the only fault i found were the stairs, being on the third floor the stairs were very steep and after four days hard going

we waited until the last minute to reserve a place, so i guess we were lucky to get it, but it was pretty dirty and overpriced ($100 usd per night). our room was on the very top floor up many, many steep stairs. cleaning was cursory -- our sheets weren't changed once over 5 days. lots of noise from the streets, though we did want to be in the center of things so can't complain about that. however, if you're booking early i'm sure you can find something better!

this was a disappointment. the room was filthy, there were candy wrappings all around the floor and i swear there was a footprint about 2 meters high on the wall. no view either, unless you count a wall at a distance of 1 meter. this may be all right if you're on a seriously low budget and plan on being too drunk or stoned to care, but if you like clean rooms and a bit of peace and quiet, seek it elsewhere. the staff were quite civil though.

highly recommended, no qualms whatsoever
i have stayed here every november since 1995 and plan to return again this year. the rooms are smallish, but i don't look to host a convention in my room. the rooms are clean and the showers have plenty of hot water. the location is great.the staff is friendly and helpful. breakfast is good and i have never gone away hungry. i have stayed at 4-star hotels in amsterdam and i would rather spend my money on amusements than the hotel.

better than many three star hotels
i just stayed there and this place was perfect. if you are looking for luxury, this is not your place. but if you are looking fr comfort, value, and cleanliness, this is your place. paid 150 euro for a quad and it is right at the entrance of the red light would go back many times

i stayed at this hotel in november, 2000 and was very pleased. the room was clean, and the bed was great. the bathroom is small but certainly adequate. it is in a great location and a good value for the money. the staff was most helpful and i would stay there again.

lovely hotel and friendly staff
myself and four friends stayed here in novenmber 2001. after staying somewhere cheap and nasty before, we hoped paying a little extra would ensure a nice hotel - and it did. the rooms were clean and warm. our three person room was large. we had a view that looked down on the street below. three comfy beds. clean toilet and shower that always had lots of hot water. two of my friends stayed in a room to themselves and that was just as nice. the staff were really friendly. they must have thought we were a bit crazy, as we came back a little worse for wear on most occasions, but i'm sure they've seen it all before!! oh and the breakfast is ok, no cooked breakfast or anything, but toast, cereal, lots of nice coffee, some cheese and pate etc. i would definitely go back, for the quality of the hotel and it's location. and that won't be a long time off...

Small, clean, friendly, steep steps!
The hotel has a nice reception and the staff are indeed very helpful and friendly. However, we were in one of the top rooms on the 4th floor and the stairs were only just manageable and we are reasonably young and fit! The room was clean although the bathroom was very small. Breakfast OK, but they are never fantastic in these types of places.

nice, cheap, quiet place to stay
just got back from amsterdam and stayed here. nice quiet, clean. narrow short steps to the top floor, 4 floors. no way could you bring up a large suitcase so leave it at schipol. The people behind the desk are very friendly and helpful. especially, Tuuli, was very helpful with answers to most local questions. we'd stay there again.

nice spacious room with a view
A friend and I stayed at the Gerstekorrel for seven nights in the summer of 98. My room was very big three beds, and we had our own bathroom. the breakfast left a little to be desired, but Im a american guy so i expect some kind of huge american style buffet. the best thing about our room was the view, we had our own balcony(i think it was the only one the hotel had). If i looked to the left i saw the royal palace if i looked to the right the red light district. It was in walking distance to just about everything you would want to do. lots of resturants, stores and coffeeshops very close. It was a little pricey compared to other hotels listed, but the staff was so helpful that it didnt matter. Im going back to Amsterdam in a couple of months and i would'nt stay anywhere else but the Gerstekorrel
