Why stay anywhere else?
This is the place to stay in the dam. Maybe the only hotel which is a tourist destination itself, or at the least, part of a destination (dam square). Location is most important and you're so close to everything here, why go anywhere else. Nearby: rld, greenhouse, grey area, abraxas, you're in dam square, and a very quick walk to the western canals, spui, etc. Nice room - roomy with a good bathroom, which are essential here. The staff has heard and seen it all here. It's cool just to hangout at the lobby or the winter garden when you're stoned. A safe in the room and 24/7 room service... Ya gotta stay here at least once in your life. Tireless staff

good apartment with few limitations
i stayed at the kras junior apartment #7333 from december 8 to 19 2005. the apartment was very well supplied, full kitchen, handy washer/drier. the unit was very spacious and had a huge lanai (patio) with some views. lots of stairs-3 flights and steep and the apartment had a nearly vertical stair connecting the bedroom/bathroom to the upstairs living room and kitchen. at â¬99 per night it was a good deal. albert heijn market is very close and of course dam square. next to bulldog and cs 222, there are a few street types but they never bothered me at all. you get access to all hotel facilities as well. as long as you can do the stairs and don't mind the 'back of the kras'neighborhood it is a great deal. security was very good.

apartment was better than i expected
i rented on of the apartments for two weeks this april.it was large, clean and equipped with a washer dryer machine.the staff was quick to fix the few problems i had.i had #7316 which was right next to 222 coffeshop.a few street dealers hanging about but they were really not trouble.

four of us occupied two rooms this april. yes the hotel is very nice but the rooms were no different to a 3 star..if all you want are clean rooms and no facilities then stay elsewhere,(unless you get a bargain price!) saying that, fantastic location, couldn't beat it.

love this place
i just want to let anyone who plans on staying at the gk know that it is a great place. my fiance and i booked our room through a package deal on expedia for one of the standard rooms. when we checked in the bellman took our bags to the room and discovered that our radiator was not working. he promptly rang the front desk and requested us to be moved. they upgraded our room to one that faced dam square. we had the most beautiful view of the cities acitivities, the national monument and the palace. the bedding, bathroom and other furnishings were very comfortable as far as hotel rooms go. the breakfast buffet was very tastey as were the dinners, lunches and any snackes we ate. i would definitly recommend this hotel and especially one of the rooms that faces the square and i would stay here again.

hotel excellent perfect location, they could just do with more staff on reception, as everybody seemed to be checking in and out at the same time, but hey, if thats the only complaint, i would definatly recommend the hotel, and i would stay there again

the kras is a wonderful old hotel. after 3 rooms we can say some are ace some not so good. do not go in an apartment. you will get vertigo! they are located at the top of a very high and narrow building, which is typical i know. but the stairs are so small, narrow and downright dangerous. children, the old, and hey anyone, would have trouble getting up and down. let alone if you were drunk or stoned. you would def break something! otherwise a wonderful place to stay. excellent location, food, service. afternoon tea is how it should be! book on the net for cheaper rates! d leeds uk

very nice hotel, with very professional staff
we arrived in amsterdam withour reservations in january of 98. we found ourselves suddenly in dam square (in a car!), and the entrance to the krasnopolsky was the only way out of the chaos. we were grateful to get a room, though it was one of the last available. the room was comfortable, elegant, and had a large and comfortable bathroom. it was not what i could describe as a 5 star room, but they gave it to us for half price. the public areas of the hotel were beautiful, and the breakfast was the best i've had in amsterdam.

very well appointed
this was my fifth visit to amsterdam. i have stayed at 6 different hotels and the krasnopolsky was the nicest by far. fabulous location, and terrific concierge, and the rooms were extremely clean and large.

not 5 star or for a budget
the kras apts rent for 125 a night. i stayed there on a solo trip. being a woman, i wanted the additional saftey of the hotel and someone to carry my bags up 3 flights. the location can't be beat and the hotel ammenities are top notch. the apts lack a lift and a/c. i was able to sit on the steps each night and boat and people watch. #7333 is 3 flights up but has french doors in the bedroom that open to a large private patio. i was able to order my dinner from room service...reasonable...and dine on the patio with a great view of oude kerk. it was a great experience

great room, great room service, great price
we stayed in one of the kraz apartments in september of 02. it was very large, perhaps the size of three or four normal european hotel rooms. the apartment had a utilitarian kitchen with washer/dryer, and an average bathroom (from prior visits to this hotel i have now learned that the hotel room bathrooms are much nicer than the apartment bathrooms). the rest of the apartment, however was quite well outfitted. there was a tv, vcr, cd player, and fax machine as well as two very large leather sofas. a wall of windows opened out onto a nice view of a canal, and right below was the outdoor patio section of the bulldog coffeeshop which eminated pleasant whaffs of smoke billowing through our curtains. at night the view of the porno places accross the canal made for some interesting people watching with my zoom lens. 24 hour room service was excellent and diverse. although we felt safe in our room, my 4:30 a.m. forray out around the block to take pictures proved both harrowing and stupid.

better luck this time
i reviewed this hotel negatively last time due to a smelly trouser press. recently i stayed at the kras again and found the room i got this time to be much more in line with my expectations of what a nice hotel room is like such as luxor or bellagio. the only negative comment i have is that the airco seemed ineffective during the latest hot spell. overall the atmosphere (the live piano music is a nice touch), decor, and location make the kras an excellent choice for it's price range.

comfortable elegance with exceptional service
this is one of the few 5 star hotels that exudes elegance without the usually requisite stuffiness. my room was nicely furnished in contemporary decor with a clean marble bath. the hotel staff are very accommodating, friendly, and professional. the interior view of the service area/courtyard wasn't exactly what i was hoping for, but it was quiet. room service menu was creative and tasty. an outstanding place to puff and watch the simpsons at the end of a great day in the city.

good family stay
two adults and a child - this was a great stay for our first family trip to amsterdam! central location was key...convenient to good walking, shopping, trams and a grocery (we trade a few restaurant meals for a better hotel). stayed 10 wonderful days in a room that had immense windows that opened toward the palace and gave you the social feeling of dam square without being in the middle of it. our 'balcony' view made it nice for us adults to lounge, get mellow and people watch until the wee hours while our child slept soundly in thier bed. the double-paned glass and insulated curtains kept out the morning noise and glare of the square so we could sleep-in and nap. great, fluffy beds and nicely furnished room. complimentary hot water kettle and all the coffee and tea you could drink (their in-room instant coffee is better than most brewed american java). the staff were excellent, and the atmosphere upscale - nice to come back to after being out in the city. we were treated respectfully at every turn...even when we checked in on the heels of some piggish, obnoxious americans. i'm sad to read about others who did not have such a good experience here. you might want to check your room for smells, etc. before finalizing your check-in.

i took a short trip to amsterdam last fall for only a day from london, looked around the area to find a nice hotel to stay in for future visits. the kras's entrance and sevice impressed me, i figured if i got lost in the narrow streets in amsterdam i could merely ask where is the 'dam' square and most people could help me. i visited amsterdam for 10 days in february 2002, decided to stay in a central location and the krasnapolsky fit the bill. very helpfull business staff, seems that the hotel caters to the business client not the tourist pot smokers. the various additions to the hotel were confusing, but all in all, the price was great (115 euros per night) off season. this was less than most of the close 3-4 star hotels and definitely ranked high in convenience. the concierge helped with all of my needs. after walking all over the rld and various coffeeshops it was relaxing to return to a clean, upscale hotel. i did not feel that i was staying in a hotel full of grunge hippies and college kids. comfort and style can exist in areas like amsterdam.

truly a five-star hotel, go in the off-season for the best deals
i found a deal on this website for a 50% off a single business room. so go during the off-season! for ê135 a night, the value couldn't be beat anywhere in town. room was very quiet and private, the staff was friendly and helpful, and the room service was excellent. cable tv with pay channels was another outstanding feature. i will surely be returning to the krasnapolsky next time i'm town. the central location right on dam square was very convienient as well.

an excellent short stay in a superb hotel.
don't be put off by some of the reviews of this place - it's as good as you make it! good deals in january meant that it was actually cheaper than some of the 3 star hotels in the city centre. the location couldn't be better, and the room was excellent - climate controlled and quiet, and the staff were very helpful. the atmosphere in the restaurants and the bar was very welcoming. i'd go again, especially taking advantage of some of the off-peak deals. as for the computerised mini-bar, if automatic charging discourages guests from fingering merchandise that they have no intention of consuming, then i'm all for it !!

great room, location, and ameneties.
loved it! now i have stayed here before in the nasty rooms they reserve for those not in the know, and those are a rip off. my room was huge, great, new, etc. i really like this place. also they often have very good deals and the location can't be beat.

Superb service, lousy rooms. Not worth it.
The Grand kraznapolsky is superbly located and has one of the best hotel bars/reception areas i've ever seen. The service was warm and efficient. That being said, i doubt if I'd ever stay there again. Our room, located immediately above three RLD windows, smelled of urine and body odor. The beds were very comfortable, the bath very clean...but the smell! Apparently, a previous guest had urinated on the heater. A couple other things to relate: First, the hotel attempted to charge us for breakfasts we had never eaten. Thankfully, we audited our bill carefully at checkout. Secondly, there is a display picture outside the winter garden breakfast area, claiming to be a drawing of the original indoor pool; the identical picture is correctly displayed in San Francisco, California, USA...so somebody is lying. For the expense, I would expect better rooms; this is NOT a five-star hotel. Of course, all rooms are not created equal; I wonder what kind of room we might have had, had we spent an additional NLG 100,00/night.

We called it Hotel Krapnapolsky
Room stunk. The halls stunk of disinfectant. The staff was nice and it had a beautiful entrance so it makes a great first impression. But the room was subpar and I saw for the first time a minibar that charges you if you remove an item even if you don't eat it. I have a feeling so many businessmen like to go there is because it is so close to the Red Light District. When I went there, I was behind groups of businessmen. Later when I got back to the Krapnapolsky, the same guys were walking in. Pigs....just like me.

Location: 5 stars Room: 2 or 3 stars
Location: The Krasnapolsky is right on the Dam, which for me the tourist, is perfect. Rooms: Pricey and stinky. The air smelled of cigarettes, the bed and pants press (and then my pants) of body odor. This is supposed to be a 5 star hotel. The lobby, facilities and location are but I've had better rooms at budgetel. Verdict: The Kras is badly in need of an interior room makeover. The Swisshotel across the street was ten times nicer (and cheaper).

not quite worth it
The location in Dam Sq. is good but a bit loud. The rooms are quite cold and unimpressive considering the cost. The smaller hotels outside of the main squares are more charming and a better bargain.
