    not bad if you know...

...what you're getting .don't expect a quaint canalside experience ,this is a modern high rise sandwiched between the tropen museum and ooseterpark, and about a block from the outer singel...quiet,secure...if you want to be where the action is, not your choice...if you need a place to recover from jetlag , it'll do nicely. trams 9 & 14 stop right in front of the hotel.these will get you to the centre quickly...the tropen offers an amsterdam rarity : free parking ...we stayed here from 01-03,for a total of 12 to 14 nights and were given a variety of double rooms ranging from roomy w/balcony to kinda cramped...staff were ok and available 24/7 ...breakfast ok if its part of the package ,but way overpriced if paid for seperately...dapperstraat market just a block away...(kind of a poor mans cuyp)...travel agents seem to book this through nw airlines...a bit overpriced by us standards ,but by those of amsterdam not too bad....neighborhood coffeeshop 'happy people' a nice local shop... the tropen is also a stop on the connexxion shuttle to/from schipol...recommended to those who want a hotel a bit out of the centre,to rest and recover for another day of amsterdamming

    awful. just awful.

this is one of the most unpleasant hotels i've ever encountered. (now named the nh tropen.) the room was clean. that is the most positive thing i can say. the staff were unhelpful in most regards. they were deceitful in others. they knew the pay t.v. channels did not work but they failed to acknowledge that until pressed forcefully. the 'restaurant/bar' is closed friday, saturday and sunday. (they don't tell you that in the brocures.) the one vending machine in the lobby never worked. they also charge about a euro per minute to use the internet. the place is cheerless and dreary. awful. just bloody awful.

    quiet place to stay.

this is a good value. the room rate is reasonable and the staff are helpful. the rooms are clean and comfortable. the tulip inn tropen is reached via tram #'s 9 and 14. the tram stop is only a few steps from the entrance to the hotel. if you are looking for a good quiet hotel that is not in the busiest sections of city centre, this is it. recommended for those who don't need to be in the middle of what's happening but would still like easy access to the fun spots.
