Great place for smokers
My second visit this year and i found this hotel just great, the single room i had was small but only being 5ft4 it was ok size wise for me and besides its only to sleep in. The breakfast was ok the staff were all polite and very helpfull. It was a smokers room witch is what i requested, i would recomend if you like a coffee during the day or evening...... Take a travel kettle as there is no kettle or cups in the room and there is a little mini market next door to the hotel for milk or anything else for that matter. na great little hotel!!!!

For those on a budget- 2 and a half stars
I would definitely echo all the prior comments on room size!! my single room, not including the bathroom, was a little larger than a closet. You will probably fall off the thin, tiny cot-size "bed. " the bathroom is acceptable, but it has that weird dutch thing where the shower does not have a tub barrier, so all the water goes spilling out onto the rest of the bathroom floor. It was pretty hot, and i don't remember if it had a/c, or if it just wasn't working. There are some significant positives. The place is pretty cheap considering where you are. The location is pretty good, with a pretty quick walk to dam square, the beautiful jordaan neighborhood, and a bit more of a walk to get to leidseplein. The staff are friendly enough and speak english. This is for the budget traveler, but ask about the room situation/size, and especially the bed size.

Clean and simple with friendly staff
I had 3 nights at the hotel. And it was better than many other hotel in the area, close to the centralstation. I was very glad to find a good japaniese restaurang across the street. Olle eriksson a comingback guest.

Smokey and small
Definitely don't stay in a single room, it's the size of a pincushion and kind of depressing. I also requested a non-smoking room in advance and when i arrived it absolutely reeked. When i mentioned it they said that it was never guaranteed - which surely should have been mentioned before i got there?? if you're a non smoker i wouldn't recommend it.

good value hotel
i stayed in the citadel on 15th to 17th february 2002. i could not fault the hotel for the price charged. we had a balcony overlooking the trams and had a wonderful time.

like a jail cell, only cleaner
do not stay in a single room! you have all been warned. the hotel is nice, the counter people were so-so. the room was clean. it was so small it was depressing not to mention opressive. now i know rooms in amsterdam are small, but not this small. the bed came out from the wall like a cot in a jail cell. the mattress was awful. the bathroom was bad (the toilet was so high off the ground my feet dangled) i tried to think of it as a monk's cell rather than a jail cell. why two stars then? well it could have been worse, i suppose.

Very pleasant and great location
We had a wonderful stay at the Citadel. The rooms were comfortable and clean and the service was very helpful and accomodating, especialy on New Years Eve and they mailed my keys to the States when I left them behind in my room. The location is perfect to see the city and beyond as it is near the tram lines and the central station. Highly recomended.
