it used to be a better deal

when i first went to the singel, the single rooms were 50e. last time it was up to 60e. now it is even higher. the location is great. the single rooms are very small. think smaller than a dorm room. the bathroom may be ensuite, but it is a bathroom where there is no seperate shower stall. you shower on the floor of the bathroom, right next to the toilet. not atypical for europe, just not up to western standards. and the sink is in the room, outside of the bathroom. the canal view was great, the window was large and opened easily and they seemed to be smoker friendly. the hotel and room were clean and the staff were pleasant. however, there has got to be better values. the room is just too small, the bathroom too utilitarian. the breakfast wasn't that great. for reference, i stayed at the 4star marriott leidseplein in feb. 2005 for 79e, double occupancy, through priceline.com. a far better value. unless you get a room at the singel for less than 65e, i would look elsewhere. which is a shame because it is a cute hotel and the staff tries hard. the hotel does have a lift. the international phone call rates from the room were exceptionally low.

    noisy and pricey

the location is very nice and convenient, but the rooms are very small with minimal amenities. lower floor rooms are noisy due to lobby. found a better, cheaper hotel nearby.

    cozy with great canal views.

the singel is situated nicely on one of the oldest canals in amsterdam and is only a short walk from central station. it has it's own rld just around the corner and a variety of fine coffeeshops (i.e. the doors, rokerij). the staff seemed a bit disturbed at our behavior during the breakfast hour because of the amount of food we were consuming (american appetite after smoking will do it all the time). it is ideal for the smoker, since no one seemed to mind that we were smoking out the place. i would; however, go back and this time ease up on the portions at breakfast.
