Great palce, where u want to be in amsterdam

Well, my brother and i have stayed @ rookies, on our last 2 trips to the dam. This place is just what you want in amsterdam. ( a friendly, clean, place to hang your hat, out of the way from the hussle, and bussle of the dam square area) jonny has always gone out of his way to treat us right, and make us feel welcome. There are some great night spots all within walking distance of the rookies, so the stumble home is easy. I would recommend rookies to anyone looking for a friendly, well priced place, with everything you need to make your stay in the dam a memorable one! thanks again jonny! good job! the canadians

How would you describe your personal hell?

Then if you would like to experience it, book a room at hotel the rookies. the worst place where i have ever stayed, rooms are very tiny, restless, breathless and the receptionists are completely mad... i would not even recommend it to my worst enemy!!!!

    Location, people, gezellig

I arrived early in amsterdam, and was greeted warmly and within an hour(10am)they had my room ready. I stayed for a week and was pleased with everything. The location is very near everything, restaurants, tram lines and entertainment. the people that worked at the hotel were pleasant and helpful. I have stayed at 6 or 7 places in amsterdam, and will now just stay here. Thanks for a good stay

    one of the best

this was our 5th visit to the city staying in different hotels, and this is the best yet at the price. clean rooms and an acceptable breakfast. the staff went out of their way to welcome us and nothing was a problem. we took a 70 year relative and she was put on the first floor to save climbing the stairs. my only complaint would be that the sun terrace closes at 8pm. other than that a fine hotel in a good area with exelent staff. we will return. thanks upton and rookies

beautiful place in the best location

as any building in amsterdam, small winding steps and small rooms. the stairs can get tricky if you're out of line, thank god for handlebars :p as for the hotel, it is just splendid for what it costs, stayed there with my bro for 4 nights, great breakfast, incredibly friendly reception, thnx guys, clean room with tv, and a big window (stayed in 301), at nights in spring (19/05 - 23/05) had the moon on the window. the hotel's greatest attribute is it's terrace, with cozy chairs, nice plants and a beautiful view of a quiet street and a small park (ofcourse smoker-friendly, as all the hotel is). as far as location is concerned, especialy if you're a 'smoker', i suppose it's the best you can get. minutes away from the van gogh museum and park (best place in amsterdam if you ask me) and even closer to the vondelpark, an amazing park with trees and canals - lakes, leidseplein is a very nice place, with lot's of entertainment, rookies downstairs is a very good coffeshop, with a pool table, ang very good gear ,you should try 'northern lights', a dutch variety :)

nice room and location for the $$$...

stayed at the uptown for 5 evenings(feb.3-8) in the single room, which was very cozy, yet clean and very nice. john, the guy at the desk greeted me whole-heartedly when i arrived at 8a.m.! the only downsides i found were that there is currently construction going on next door and they start hammering away at 7a.m. and after a long night in amsterdam, you figure it out! also, i don't know if this is a european thing or what-not, but no ice! no ice maker anywhere, and no bags of ice for sale anywhere! and lastly, i did have the room directly above the rookies facing the street, and needless to say it was a tad bit noisey at times. but all in all a great stay was had, and they had absolutely no problems about smokin' the good stuff in your room. i am 99.9% sure i will stay there again my next trip. thanks! ntr

    very good

stayed here 3 nights back in july-august 2002. enjoyed the room very much! in case some of you don't know, elevators are a bit rare in amsterdam and this hotel is no exception. the stairs are steep and winding. don't bring a lot of luggage.

location great and good service from staff

i stayed in the hotel for 2 nights and there townhouse for 5. rooms are small and as exciting as hospital room, but they are functional. two single beds pushed together, they kept sliding apart. it was clean and everything worked remember your not there to hangout in your hotel room anyway. we moved over two townhouse after two nights that was preplaned, i thought i needed a bigger place. it has two levels and would have been better if cost was split between a couple people. townhouse cost almost twice as hotel room. the only negative was no phone, but they gladly let us use one in lobby to call home whenever needed. service from the staff was great in hotel and coffeeshop underneath hotel. they had good gear also. it may be a one star but it is a real good one! to some it up low cost, great location, descent dutch breakfast, good service, coffeshop below can make up for rooms size.

stayed at the uptown 4/23/04 to 05/03/04. great location. room ok

arrived there on 4/23 at 09:30 and left luggage. was told to come back at 12:00. at 13:00, room still not ready and very tired from red-eye flight from nj. go out and come back at 15:00 and still not ready. they had to vacuum. went downstairs to rookies and sat outside with a pipe and was falling asleep in my chair. finally at 15:30, the guy says that if i don't mind them not vacuuming, i could have the room. at this point, i didn't care. i asked if they could vacuum tomorrow. i don't think that room was ever vacuumed. that said, the room was larger than the one i had at the park with a nice view of the street. it was warm when i was there, so it was noisy until about 01:00 with the window open. i imagine that in the winter, it would be fairly quiet. i think that the location of this place is it's best attribute. right near the leidseplein, rookies right downstairs and near the rokerij and the noon. a really great thai restaurant called leeuws right up the block. also.

    adequate

having read the reviews below i was exited that this hotel would be the one that i would settle on for the rest of my trips to the dam. still looking. pros - good location. cons - generally, more like an b&b than a hotel and not that cheap compared to others offering the same (i.e. acro). bathroom was a combined toilet/shower room which isn't really suitable for more than 1 person, i.e. you open the door - water can go everywhere. room was cold. not exactly a great choice for breakfast - tea/coffee, ham, salami and toast - with scrambled egg when requested. erratic cleaning schedule. i've stayed in worse - but it was an emotional let down.

a wonderful, clean , friendly and homey hotel in the best location.

i stayed in the uptown for two of the 7 nights i spent in amsterdam - and the next time i go, i'll only stay there. beautiful view from my third floor room and very clean and spacious. good price, good breakfast, outstanding service (getting my bags up & down the steps was done by the desk clerks cheerfully) and having rookies downstairs, and steps from the leidseplein made it even better!!

    a great stay

this was the third hotel i stayed at in amsterdam. it was the cheapest, but by far the nicest. i arrived in amsterdam on a friday night at 11:30pm and the only room i could find was at the american hotel...700 guilders!! that was for one night. definitely not worth that much, especially when i arrived at the hotel uptown (for 155 guilders) and the rooms were nicer, the staff was friendlier, and the location was prime. i stayed for 7 nights. i had a great room on the fourth floor overlooking the back. great view! mind you, i did have the smallest room, but really, what do you need a big room for. it was clean, had a bed, fresh sheets, huge bathroom with shower, cable t.v, dresser, etc. a great perk is having rookies right under the hotel too. if you can, stay here! i highly recommend this hotel. great room for a great rate.
