pricey but you get what you pay for.
one block over from the damrak.5 minutes walk to thr red light.very clean.good service.circle tram stop right outside .happy overall, but as i said pricey.
Excellent location, reasonable price
I stayed April 28, 2001, during the Queen's Birthday Weekend. No rooms available online or at train hotel service. Very secure, required room key to call elevator to lobby. Room was quiet (with window shut), and breakfast was decent. Good neighborhood, will never want to walk down Damrak again after discovering this street.

Definitely not a hotel for smokers.
I stayed in the cok city in Dec 00. The rooms are extremely small but they are also very clean. You have to leave your key at the front desk every time you leave the hotel. And they DO NOT tolerate smoking weed in the hotel. I know this because hotel security lectured me for 10 minutes that the only place I am allowed to smoke is in the coffeeshops. They were nice about it but for the money I paid (it's not cheap) I should be able to do whatever I pleased in my room. On the upside there is a small red light district directly behind the hotel, and there are several c'shops in the immediate vicinity.

Wonderful customer-service oriented staff!
Rate at four star level because of staff!!!!! They are exceptional! What it lacks in ammenities, its staff more than compensate with their positive attitudes!!! Small clean hotel that allows easy access to center of city...... tram just outside the door, and short walk to train station.

clean, well furnished, small, but nice
Well, I stayed at the Cok City in May of 00 and found it to be quite cozy. The room we stayed in was small, quite small, but real clean and comfortable. Besides the room's size, the only problem I had was with the fact that the window didn't allow for any ventilation whatsoever. The hotel frowns (not literally) upon smoking merryjuana in the room but we did anyways under the notion that we would much rather suck down second-hand weed smoke than cigarette smoke. The room did have a fan in it and it proved to be quite useful. The staff at the hotel was the best. They made no mention of the fact that I left an ashtray full of roaches in the room all the time, even when the room was cleaned. I would recommend Cok City for one reason... THE LOCATION. It is located on a quiet street even though it is in the heart of the busseling city. There are a few great coffeshops in the area (Grasshopper, Homegrown Fantasy, Grey Area). It was really nice to be able to walk thirty yards down the street to enjoy the coffeeshop atmosphere, however a little farther of a stroll and you can find yourself at the Greenhouse! Anyways, I definately would stay again...if I had the money...at $140 u.s. it wasn't cheap at all.
OK, For a City Location
I usually stay at Cok Hotel near Vondel Park when visiting Amsterdam, and stayed at the Cok City Hotel for a week last year. Nice, clean, friendly staff, great breakfasts. Popular with the middle-aged set and business types. Moderately priced... a good value. Being in the heart of the centrum, expect a lot of street noise in the evening. I would not hesitate to stay there again.

Fijn maar klein (fine but klein)
A nice hotel (we always sleep there when we're in Amsterdam), nice staff, tasty breakfirst, but very small rooms. The ingenious arrangement uses every square centimeter, but it's still pretty cramped. Fot the real Amsterdam gourmets: rooms on the backside have a direct view of de Walletjes.
